I have a late '16 MBP which I use for digital photography and want to add an external drive on which I can record hard copies of raw photographs and also video footage from Canon EOS system. I figure something with more capacity than DVD might be better. Other significant variables I will ultimately evaluate would be media cost, permanence, speed of recording, reliability of drive and media. Any suggestions as to type of drive that would be best for this application appreciated.

Hmmm any external drive would do, the big question is the circumstances in which you will be using the drive.
If you need something with speed you should go for SSD and USB-C 3.1 gen 2/Thunderbolt 3, if you need capacity then HHD and USB-C 3.1 gen 2. The option for speed offers better performance in rough environment as there is no moving parts, on the other hand if you just need it for an office the HHD offers much more capacity.
For specific drive recommendations maybe ask in the photography forum

Portable USB3 platter-based drive (higher capacity) ??
Portable USB SSD (faster, but lower capacity) ??
External USB BluRay burner with M-DISC (25gb or 50gb, M-DISCs will last hundreds of years once-burned) ??

Thanks. Good points, all. BlueRay may be the way to go to get archival copy of everything.
