Hi guys, I´am a designer whos are working in a agency and now we are working on a 3D project with 3DS MAX and rendering with brazil but in a near future we maybe have to switch to Mac (Good News) and as you know 3d max isn´t available for Mac OS X (the bad news) then we must work with Maya i´am pretty sure of that. The question here is What is the best renderer for Maya like brazil is for 3d max as example. It would be nice if it works PPC and Intel...

You have a lot of renderers to choose from with Maya. I work with Mental Ray (it comes standard with Maya) and I like it. Renderman and Maxwell are 2 you might also want to look at. Mayas native renderer is fast but lacks things like GI, HDRI, Caustics... all the fun stuff. It also has a native hardware renderer and a vector/swf renderer to play with.

If you are new to Maya be prepared for a bit of a learning curve even if you are good with other 3D apps. ;)

BTW are you sure that 3d max will not work on a Intel mac with bootcamp?

3ds max will work with bootcamp without any major issues, not keen on parallels due to no dx9 support iirc.

Maya, not sure but iirc brazil was being ported to it

You also have now ... V-ray for Maya you can look as well to Turtle very powerful too .... as the other mention you have Renderman, Mental Ray and native Maya render that if you know how to use it you get pretty neat results .

Hi Again!

Thanks for all answers, this is really useful for me I been thinking on Turtle as Mental Ray alternative I herd some good things about Turtle. What do think about it? And yes 3d max runs nicely with bootcamp but here we want use Adobe suits, 3d and Design stuff only with Mac OS.

Has anyone got or does anyone know if you can get 3D Studio MAX to work in CrossOver on either Linux or Mac OSX?

It's stated to have full OpenGL support,I'm running Combustion 3, CoD2 and Jedi Outcast 2 with it and it seems to like OpenGL.

it might be worth trying the demo then, it wouldn't cost anymore than a few minutes of time to test it.

The question is then would it perform at an acceptable level.

That was my main concern, is it worth the download and then having the application run like crap

I Agreed, should try out Maya + MentalRay on Mac. Thats what Im using at the moment. Macbook Pro + Maya 8.5 works fine so far.

Look out Vray when they come out for Maya. :D

The thread does seem to have come to a halt but let's post anyway:

It seems Vray for maya beta is comming along nicely but still haven't found any proof it also comes to the osX platform. But the good news is that it does exist for cinema 4d on the mac platform so hopefully it will come soon.

Also there will soon be the FinalRender for maya on osX. I'm very curious to see what it will give as result.
Let's hope the availability of more renderers will make the osX a more attractive platform as well as hoping that autodesk will put more effort in the stability of maya and it's productivity.
