Best resolution for 50" plasma?

Quick question: what's the best resolution (200 dpi, 300 dpi, etc.) to display photos on a 50" plasma?

I've never worked with photos on a plasma before, so how would I go about this? Thanks!

I don't understand your question... the Plasma is nowhere near 200DPI... it's ... what... probably about 75 DPI, depending on the resolution of the one you get? Maybe less? The resolution of televisions is very low in comparison to print media.

Are you creating new images or using existing ones? Either way, why wouldn't you just scale so that the image matched the actual native screen resolution?

That's the thing... I don't know much about the resolution of plasmas. I understand the resolution is lower, but I didn't realize it was that much lower. So I guess leaving the photos at 72 dpi would be just fine? This is for a DVD photo slideshow, by the way.

Well, let's see... a 50" TV (16:9) is about 43" x 24"... if it's a 1080p set, that means the resolution is 1920x1080. 1920 pixels in 43" is 44PPI....

I guess it depends on whether you're doing Ken Burnsey kind of stuff (where you pan over part of a photo at a time).

But is this a DVD that plays in a DVD player, a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray DVD, or a DVD-ROM? Making matters worse, the DVD (for a DVD player) resolution is only 720x480, or 720x576 if you're in a PAL country.

Most 50" plasmas are 1080 high by 1920 wide. You need to know what the resolution of your plasma is to be sure. Some cheap plasmas are only 720 high by 1280 wide.

Measure the vertical and divide into 1080 to determine the number of dots per inch. For example if the vertical is 25" then it's 1080 divided by 25 or 43.2 dots per inch.

Most 50" Plasmas are one of the following resolutions:
- 1920 x 1080 pixels (HDTV or 1080i)
- 1280 x 720 pixels (HDTV or 720p)
- 1024 x 576 (SD PAL or 576p)
- 1024 x 480 (SD NTSC or 480p)
- 1440 x 768 pixels
- 960 x 576 (PAL) or 960 x 480 (NTSC) (used in very cheap plasmas or very old plasmas).

So try to keep the images native ratio compared to the resolution of your screen so that you will keep image quality. Still the resolution in pixels should be in you users guide. And remember the higher the res image the sharper the image.

it will display 1080 in only HDV tho

if hes burning this onto a normal DVD, it will only display in SD, which is a lot lower res then 1080, you can cut it in half, if not more
