I am currently in the Marine Corps so I can't take a class since my schedule is always full because of training purposes. I was wondering what sites are good for beginners and professionals.

The best site is out-side! You can read and read and read, but in the end you have to take pictures, all the time, many. Look at them and see what you like and what not, look at the metadata to see how you did that, take the same shot with every setting of your camera. Practice!

Kenrockwell.com and stopshootingauto.com are both good resoucres. Adorama.com has some decent tips and whatnot, too.

My blogroll has loads of helpful links for those interested in learning photography for beginners and professionals. I link to big photo agencies and a few informative photographers to see how they do it and to general resource websites such as some which provide lighting or camera guides.

Just look a lot of pictures and go out there and take some yourself.

I have to post. I read the title of your thread and for a split second I read it as "Best site to learn pornography". Luckily a quick double take fixed me. My mind must be in the gutter tonight. :D

Hey phas3, I have an extra copy of the field guide for the D40. If you want it I can mail it to you.

^^^^ yeah that, but one more step. Show your pictures to established artsy types and photographers. Posting here and asking for critique is really good. So often people take literally thousand of pictures trying and trying and are just never happy with how they turn out, and without someone telling you what you could do a little differently you may never know. Once you have a little feedback on WHY something is or is not appealing you will better be able to judge your own work and eventually just pick up the camera look at a scene and snap something wonderful no editing required.

First of all, thank you for your service.

Depending on where you're stationed, you may want to check for classes anyway. One of the things I wish I'd done more of when I was in the Army was take advantage of the local college classes and rec center resources.

These days there are a lot of online college resources- and getting credit for promotion boards and potential job skills is always a good investment. Don't discount it- because it could be worth the hassle, and some units will give you a little more slack for doing college study than not. Heck, talk to whoever your local education person is, they may come up with resources that we wouldn't- I know the Army had a whole correspondence course thing for several career fields, and the MOS 4641 probably has a raft of interesting training materials, so it's worth seeing if they're available via mail.

If you've got a Public Affairs office nearby, you may also want to see if they've got a friendly photographer, or if there's a chance to do it for your unit. When I was in Germany, (right down the street from the Schneider Optics factory dammit!) one of my friends was the "official" unit photographer (and half a dozen other things) for our command- even though he was officially a medic- you end up doing a lot of grip and grins, but it may give you access to a wide range of equipment you couldn't otherwise get to play with.

Look Down

The best site??

Look down...you're standing in it. Live and breath light 24/7.
Post production is vital in learning what light is all about.
