Best Software or Method to Make This Graphic

How do I design a logo using lettering that resembles a chain. Basically I want a word spelled out in a chain.

Sort of like the below.

Would it be better to search for a font similar to what I want to do and just manipulate the colors?

Or could I use a program that would let me manipulate a straight chain and just set the points where I want it to bend.

I would actually prefer the latter, because I would be able to design exactly how I want it. I'm a newbie to graphic design and don't know where to start with this. I want to make an 11 word logo, perhaps in cursive.

I have access to all the Adobe software via my school. What are some software recommendations? Illustrator, Photoshop?

Illustrator's probably your best bet. See how to create pattern brushes. You can also Google "illustrator chain pattern brush" and find lots of similar free and low-cost patterns already built and ready to use

Either Illustrator or Photoshop can do this. Use whichever program you are most comfortable with. Here is a video on how to do it in PS. Good luck with it.

It looks best if you render it, you sample looks kind of flat as the chains don't reflect eachother. Try Blender. Just for the modelling, a simpler program like Sketchup might be handy. Don't try to model a chain yourself, but grab one from its 3D warehouse (free library).

Since you want it as a logo I'd want it to be vector art—or at least available as vector. That will narrow down your options.

I know you didn't ask, but I will offer my opinion regardless ...

A good logo needs to work when small and in black and white as well as color. The first thing I'd do is see if the chain 'R' works under those constraints before committing to that design.

A logo should also convey something about what your company or organization does ... so unless you're selling chains or bondage services or in the slave trade, I'd have to ask what that logo is saying about you.

If you're using the chain as a metaphor for "linked", then I'd consider zooming in on just a few links as that would be more visually impactful than the whole strand.
