Best Solution for ATV & NAS without a computer on

What is the best solution for a JB AppleTV2 to connect to a NAS box with my iTunes library and movies on without also having to switch on my iMac and open iTunes?

I have tried xmbc on the ATV2 but it will not read my iTunes playlists and some movie formats make it crash.

I have tried Plex on my ATV2 and having the Plex server running on my NAS but it is buggy and again no iTunes playlists.

I have also tried Firecore's ATVFlash black but again its buggy.

I just want a solution that will allow my ATV to see my iTunes music and playlists which are all stored on my NAS WITHOUT having to turn on my iMac and run iTunes. I really hate the way Apple makes you have to have a computer on and iTunes open!

Putting some music on went from simply popping in a CD in your HiFi to turning on TV/ATV/NAS/Computer with iTunes and hoping they all connect.

Go on the XBMC website and instally the nightly

I have everything on my NAS and I can watch anything no bug

I am on the latest version of Apple TV too

It's the very first sticky thread in the iOS section of the XBMC forum, the first post gives you all the info you need including all the download links. The last build is about 15 days old and is still quite buggy for me as well.

Not so long ago I was a fan of XBMC. I was doubting of getting an iPad 2 because I wouldn't be able to have XBMC installed.

But the fun ends. There seems to be small problems arising every now and then. You need to keep updating your nightly builds, which is quite tedious. Also, the streaming is bad, it is always buffering, watching 720p files over wireless is near impossible. And their support forums are far from being friendly.

The controls in the Apple TV for fast-forward and rewind are lacking smoothness.

All in all, for me it ended becoming a hassle to use XBMC with the Apple TV. It's better to either convert your movies to m4v or simply start buying your movies from Apple, which is what I've been doing lately.

But, if you still want to install it, you first need to JB your Apple TV. Use Seas0nPass for doing this. After JB the ATV, install the latest official build: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Install_XBMC_on_ATV2.

Then follow the instructions from the link of the previous post to install the nightly build.

No non-iTunes solution will let you play DRM media. This might be causing the crashing issue. Only iTunes itself is able to decrypt and play purchased music and videos.
