for those of you with laptops, what do you prefer for the following (and why)?

1. backup solution. i'm hearing that most of you really like time machine. however, i use carbonite on my soon-to-be-retired pc, which is kind of like mozy, but doesn't have a mac client yet. anyway, i would think that some of you would be worried about not having an off-site backup solution, and therefore time machine wouldn't be sufficient.

so my question is, would you recommend something like mozy over time machine because it is off site? or would you still stick with time machine despite not being an off-site solution.

2. external monitor and flat screen tv. the cheapest solution i've figured out so far is hook up my mini-dvi to dvi connector to a dvi-to-rga connector and connect that to my old external monitor cable. but i'm wondering if the picture quality will be awful. similarly, my plasma, being an old plasma, has a serial computer rga plug, so i can do that there, too. but if the picture quality suffers, then i'd really notice it on a big screen. i'd likely be watching itunes tv shows and ripped dvds.

so i guess other options to save for would be apple tv, using a dvi cable instead of the serial cable, or getting a new flat screen or external monitor that uses hdmi.

what do you think?
