I have been scouring the App store to find a reliable texting app that my girlfriend and I can use (both iPhone owners). I have looked at Unlimited SMS 2.0 and TextFree Unlimited, but I was wondering if there were any other texting apps that I should look at? I currently have the $15/month for 1,500 texts with AT&T, but looking at my monthly useage, I really only send/receive 5-600 text/month, and most of them are to my girlfriend. I should also note that neither of our iPhone's are unlocked or jailbroken. Thanks.

i use text+

i tried the free version of textfree and the messages didn't go through half the time.... i haven't had any issues with text+!

So if you are looking for a texting app that can do what any $5 phone with SMS support can do.

1) Send Text messages.
2) Receive replies to text messages you send.
3) Receive text messages initiated from any phone with SMS.
4) Be abbe to make sounds and/or vibrate for when receiving a
text message , in both #2 and #3 case.
5) Be able to give my friends a static # for texting.

They don't exists. All the texting apps currently in the app store can only do #1 , #2, and #4 in the #2 case. This is like buying a car that can only driver forward and go left. But no right , and backwards.

So the question is not what the best texting app is , as currently their is NO texting app. But when will we have a texting app ?

All the apps currently in the app store are Send and Reply only texting apps.

Well textfree allows somebody to directly SMS you by sending it to xxxx@textfree.us

But some phones can't text to an email (like the iPhone), and its kinda clumsy and annoying to ask people to do that... plus when ATT sends a text to an email - you get a horrible footer that says something like "SMS send using ATT wireless"

EDIT: I'm going to have to test Text+ now that it has PUSH

i should clarify... that "I" use text+ but hubby uses the iphone texting.... i text to his iphone # and it gets to him via iphone SMS.... he replies back in the conversation and i receive it via text+

if he didn't have a bunch of gabby guy friends... we'd both use it and save the money....

and ya... push is great but i prefer the iphone text sound to the text+ sound!

I understand what everyone is saying, but I'm simply looking for a text app that both my girlfriend and I can use to send/receive texts from each other. I'd simply downgrade to the 200/month text plan, so I can just use those alloted texts for when my friend's text me.

Those of you who posted suggestions, thank you.

Unlimited SMS would be a good choice since both your girlfriend and you have the iPhone.

Both of you can get the app and all messages will be free and instant.

Unlimited SMS is a one time price of $2.99 while Textfree Unlimited is $5.99 per year.

Why not juse use AIM or some other instant messaging service with push notifications? You both have iPhones so obviously both have unlimited internet. Seems like a no brainer to me. I use Beejive and it works great. My girlfriend and I usually talk through gchat on there instead of texting. I have unlimited texting anyways, but I like the interface better and it's quicker and more reliable then text messages.

Derek - I am strongly considering having my girlfriend and d/l your app. I actually posed a question to you in your thread.

Steve - Neither my girlfriend or I use AIM anymore. I know we both used it frequently when we were in college, but now we rarely even bother logging on anymore. We don't even have the app installed on our iPhone's. I had been thinking about using AIM as an alternate forum to texting, but I don't think it really would work for us. Thanks for the suggestion though.

You can just create a new screen name that only your girlfriend knows and most IM apps keep you logged on for 24 hours and send push notifications if someone sends you a message(your gf). I'm not sure how this wouldn't work for you as it is EXACTLY the same thing as any of these free texting apps, but to each his own!

That's actually good point. I never really considered that since that technically could work.

Another plus of this way would be technically you would have MMS enabled. I know with Beejive and a Gchat account, I can send pictures through the interface. Also, if you are at a computer, you could "text" your gf from your computer to her phone. I really think this is your best option, but of course it is up to you.

I think the advantage of those texting apps over the free IM services is to people that don't have iphones or smart phones with unlimited internet. You could send a text to any phone. You don't need that though. You only need to send messages to another iPhone, which opens up a lot of options for you.

they're right in your case just use IM and get a program like beejive or if you feel youre not going to be heavy on the use of IM download the free aim app and just use that between the two of you

Unlimited SMS is great, fast, and reliable. You can SMS anyone and they can reply with an SMS or MMS client. Anyone that can MMS can initiate an SMS to you using XXXX@myusms.net address. All SMS messages are free to and from your account.

Since you both have iPhones why don't you check out Whatsapp to see if it meets your needs.

Edit: Since most of your messages are to your girlfriend, what's cool about WhatsApp is when she is typing a response it tells you shes typing.
