apple tends to release updates around 5pm EST, when (i assume) they assume the east coast is headed home... so not everyone is downloading at that moment. i always find that late at night is best for DL speeds, but honestly... i update when i find out there's an update. we're talking 1.5 gigs, more or less, so it's not a massive DL. so, as chrfr above suggests, "download the update when it's convenient for you".

Most releases are between 10 am and 11 am PST/PDT... which is 1 pm to 2 pm EST/EDT.

To the OP, apart from the day that the new release "drops", it should absolutely not matter what time of day you start the download/update process... there's a lot more traffic and activity on the day that a new version is released, but otherwise, it doesn't make a bit of difference.

Again, based on history... here's your proof:

While it is anybody’s guess as it completely depends on when Apple, based on previous major releases, Apple should be releasing it at around 10 AM PST/1 PM EST.

Since 2010, Apple had released a major software update at this time. If you’re wondering what time it will be released in your time zone then we’ve you covered. Check the table below to find out what time it may get released in your time zone.

Well, this is just me, I guess. But, upgrading over the net is just something I would never do. I have more than one Mac, and more than one system disk. so maybe that's part of my thinking process. But, in my mind, upgrading over the net can be full of issues. Lose of power or lose of internet connection are just a couple of reasons I wouldn't do it. I go to Apple's download site and download the Combo Updater and update all my discs locally with that. I then save it in case I need it in the future.
