I currently have an early 2008 mac pro 2.8 core with 14GB RAM. I've been on the fence for awhile now on what might be my best upgrade route. Now that the new mac pro's have been announced I feel it's time to make a decision. I don't think the new mac pro is for me. Too costly and probably overkill for the work I do. They look sweet, but not in my budget. Plus, I don't want to be early adopter with my budget. Wish I could. But, can't.
I really don't have a major issue with my current system. However I'd like it to plug into my 27" cinema display. I use the cinema display with a rmbp. My desk is being over run by displays and hardware. I use a 21" cinema with my mac pro.
Goals that I'm trying to accomplish
1. Faster
2. Clean up the desk. Use my single 27" cinema display. And retire my 21".
Routes that could accomplish this.
Option 1. Seems like a possibility. I can move most of my internal drives, ssd, video card and internal blue-ray to the new machine. RAM is cheaper for this model as well. So, I could bump it there as well. The performance boost would be ok.
Option 2. Ugh. I'm tired of buying RAM for this model. Expensive. And, I haven't found an inexpensive card that has a mini display port input.
Option 3. Buy a new iMac. Doesn't really clean up the desk. Adding an even larger display. Performance increase would be most noticeable. Would need to purchase external storage to migrate files from the octo.
If anyone has any thoughts or other options I may not be considering, I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance.
