I'm setting up a Mac Mini to work as a server in our office (nothing fancy, mainly a file server). It'll be run headless so I've been setting it up on my home network ready using the in built Share Screen function. Once it's in the office, I'll want to be able to connect to it externally from home to change settings, do maintenance etc without having to go into the office. I know I can use the vpn functionality of our office routers (Orbi Pros) to connect if I have to but that redirects all of my traffic which is a bit overkill (but secure). I'd rather not have to use third party software but if that's the best solution then I can do that. Any suggestions?

turn on screen sharing, then connect with the screen sharing client on your Mac (access this via Finder > Cmd-K and use vnc://x.x.x.x to connect directly). You will need to be on the VPN. Make sure your VPN will allow the traffic on 5900 tcp/udp.

Easily access your MAC machine remotely using apps like logmein, R-HUB remote support servers, Teamviewer etc. These are easy to use and work well.

Well this is a bit of an old thread necro. FWIW I did end up using a VPN although as I did not want it messing with my main mac's internet access, I installed OSX in a virtual machine in VMWare Fusion and have that set up with a VPN into the office and I connect to the office mac via screen sharing there. That way, I can just unpause the virtual machine and it's already all connected up with the screen connection live.

It's a bit of a matroschka doll setup, to be honest, as what I'm actually doing is using a mac to run virtual machine of a Mac to connect via screen sharing to another mac that is itself running a virtual machine of a windows installation. :D
