I need to restore my iPhone, and as I'm in the UK I'll need to re-activate it after the restore as well (I bought it already activated off eBay).

What's the best way to activate it, ie. which hack program should I use? iActivator?

Thanks.

Hey, a HUGE favor:

Can you give me a short report on your experiences so far using the iPhone without the phone/sms?

I'm SERIOUSLY considering purchasing the iPhone TODAY, but I have absolutly no intention of using the thing as a phone for at least a year, and by that point perhaps a new iPhone will be out.

Anyway, here are some of my questions:

1. Does iTunes work as expected with the activated phone (i.e. music syncing, contact syncing, calender syncing, etc). I've heard a report or two where people said they weren't able to manage their music on iTunes with there activated iPhone

2. Do the YouTube and Mail applications work with WiFi as you would hope/expect?

3. Any other advice for somebody in my situation? I'm somewhat nervous that the phone will update itself or iTunes will update it and make it unusable to me, in which case I'd have a 400 dollar unusable iPhone!

From what I hear the youtube application dont work.
You'll be able to sync and use itunes though just make sure when it gives you the option to update click no.

Hey, a HUGE favor:

It works great, just as you'd expect it to. Apart from now, iTunes is forcing me to restore for some reason so I can't use my iPhone with iTunes until I restore (which will probably wipe out the activation, hence this thread).

Yes, it works great.

Mail works great, but of course when you're not in range of WiFi it won't pick any mail up for you so it'll just check whenever you're in range again. Youtube, as has been said, DOESN'T work. But it can be hacked again but apparently it's complicated - it's not something I'm bothered about so I've just left it.

To be honest, if you're not going to use the phone/SMS, I'd get an iPod touch. For the same price, you get double the storage, and future updates etc. without worries of overriding hacks etc. Then again, you'd have to be in wifi range, and there's no mail client (although webmail should work). It depends what you want tbh.

Well, there is a "mod" or "hack" that allows you to use the YouTube application. I'm quite confident that it works, I was just hoping to get some input from somebody who actually is using his iPhone activated :)

Thanks! Here are my thoughts though:

I keep going back and forth on this, and I agree with you for the most part (in regards to future updates, no worries of overriding hacks) BUT, chances are, when the iPod Touch comes out I'll be hacking it anyway. I'm sure there will be a lot of added functionality to the Touch when it comes out (most likely a mail application, etc). So one way or another I'm going to have to deal with reading various wikis and things to keep updated on the latest hacks/cracks/patches/methods/etc.

The downsides of the iPhone are that if at some point it's impossible to Activate the iPhone, then I'll (again) have a useless iPhone. I doubt that will happen though, as I'm sure when/if major updates come out the iPhone modding/hacking community will be quick to release an Activation method.

edit: the reason I'd choose the iphone over the touch is becuase of the camera (as well as built in mic/speaker). I'll be heading to europe next summer to backpak around, and if I could take pictures and send them via open wifi networks that would be awesome.

Additionally, if a Skype or other VOIP client is released for the iPhone, that would be incredible as well.

The bluetooth feature is also a big one for me - I'm assuming some sort of bluetooth "remote" application will come out sooner or later for the iPhone - again I'd like this functionality if possible.

Well, if you're using hacks and unapproved third-party stuff, you're always going to be taking as risk, as your $$$ gadget is in the hands of the "hackers" basically. The Touch is smaller, thinner, lighter, and cheaper. And there's bound to be some good apps (if not Mail!) hacked onto it or even released by Apple, just as with the iPhone. If you don't need phone functionality, then surely you're the customer that Apple made the Touch for??

Regarding the activation, that site appears to be down :( I just don't want to brick my iPhone doing a restore as it's working perfectly atm).

Anyone successfuly used iActivator on a PPC??

There is an application for Macs called "iNdependence" that Mark from HackTheIphone.com recommended to me, though I'm not sure if it's released for the PPC - you'd have to check.

Also, again, the touch lacks the camera and microphone :(
