I like touch i.d. (I don't always have it pointed at me when I unlock), the thicker bezels to hold it, and lower price. I don't mind waiting for the price to fall, but don't want them to sellout before I get one.
 
I'd wait until the date is actually announced for the iPad event and then buy the current model the day before it occurs. Just make sure to buy it from Apple, Best Buy or another authorized reseller that offers price protection. Apple gives 14 days and Best Buy gives anywhere from 15-45 days depending on what level you are in their My Best Buy program. Then be prepared to request a price match after the new ones are released and the 2nd gen's have been put on clearance.

Forget Apple, See what a place like Micro Center (which had them on sale for $200 below sticker a few weeks back and still has them for $100 off) is pricing them at.
