So... I've been going through and scanning old family photos. And, I mean, I'm talking about a lot of them--over 1,500 photos from my grandmother going back to the early 1900's, many of which have no dates. I've tagged the ones that were labeled and that I could make educated guesses about, but I want to work with other family members on the rest.

Ideally I'd be able to share the photos along with the faces, locations, and dates I've tagged already, and either be notified of which ones the other people change or have them automatically apply back to my Photos library. Now, I know shared albums aren't really all that great in Photos. You can't really group certain photos together or tag faces. But shared iCloud albums do allow people to make comments on them, correct? If I can get notified of the comments and make the changes in the metadata, is the photo automatically updated in the shared album?

If not iCloud photo sharing, what solutions have you folks used for this sort of thing in the past? Ideally I'd like to take many of the photos and make photo books for family for Christmas this year, but now that Apple is abandoning yet-another-macOS functionality that it couldn't dumb down enough for iOS, I'm not sure how I'll go about that, other than doing Shutterfly books I guess.

While I was shooting someone's family reunion I noticed a few family members had did exactly what you are asking. They had created a slide show with photos of names and dates. While the photos was showing on the screen, they also had a photo album with the photos and asked the family if they see a photo that is missing a date or name to write it down in the photo album. If you are in the states, you can go to Michaels or AC Moore and pick up a photo album. Make copies of the photos so that you can include them in the album and have an extra copy incase it gets damaged.

Once you've have the names and dates, then create a phonebook online. There are photo sites that allow others to purchase like Blurb.

You could use Flickr to have your family to comment however most may not have access to a computer. Or you could just reach out to them, gather photos from them and then start logging them.

RE: your 2nd paragraph - you could do that but it's kind of clunky in Photos and it's assuming everyone has a Mac or iDevice. But yes, you get notifications if someone adds a comment to a photo in shared albums.

It's more likely that everyone has a Facebook account and it's easy to comment and tag people, even people who aren't on FB. For any of the older folks, it's probably already something they are familiar with to a certain degree.

The one major drawback with Facebook is reduction of picture quality though.

Flickr could work too.

If each family member creates a login, someone posts the images tagged as family and friends protected, then adds the family.members to their f&f list. They then tag images as best they can and then the family members can then add comments with updates or corrections then the person posting gets notified of updates.

I think Flickr is what I'll use. Everyone involved has a computer, though not all has a Mac. Flickr seems to be the friendliest to allow people to tag and comment on the pictures that I can transfer later back to Photos.

One question though, I've exported my photos from iPhoto with Location Information checked, and I've verified that this is present in the metadata for the files on my desktop, however, when I upload them to Flickr it doesn't seem to be including the location metadata. Is this a common problem? Is there any way I need to either prepare my files differently before upload, or something I'm missing in the Flickr web uploader that's stripping the location metadata out?

Yeah I think you can make some of your photos or group of photos password protected. Then maybe in the comments ask your family to add any comments.
