The goal is to be able to use an iPad Pro with the following - 4k@60 27" monitor connected by DP, along with external hard drive and sd card, 3.5 jack input/output, and a battery pack when away from home (Rav or Omni or ...). I gather a hub should be the answer but it seems only a handful offer a USB C port in addition to the pass through USB C for charging the iPad. Would the additional UBC C PD be the right port to traverse to DP on the monitor? Any advice would be appreciated.

You will probably be better off trying to find a hub with HDMI 2.0 or better instead of DP directly, and getting an HDMI — DP cable to use with it. The hub will be much easier to find. There are lots of those that have an extra USB-C port.

From what I have seen, most have HDMI 1.x and to connect it to DP requires a curious connection that includes USB as well to provide sufficient power to go from HDMI to DP. It seemed to me that USB C was the right match but I am unsure if USB C PD would make sense and if it was safe for the monitor as there are USB C to DP cable and adapters. The goal is to get 4k@60. 4K@60 is a rarity on the hubs I was checking out and 4k@30 was the norm.

I do agree however the ideal would be HDMI 2.0 end to end. The monitor has 3 inputs HDMI (used by NVidia Shield TV), DP used by MBP 2015 and that leaves one remaining DP available.

Have you looked at the Hyperdrive Gen 2 hubs? No personal experience but I believe one or two of them (three sizes) has the ports you need.

They're still 30Hz. A hub with 4k 60Hz over USB-C with other support (USB, audio, etc.) is hard - perhaps impossible - to find.

Yes, I have been looking at them and the Gen 2 12 port has the additional display port but is not that portable (rather chunky). I say this as it would require possibly a case than the usual that hold flatter accessories or its own case.
If I am understanding the ports on it, there are no USB ports available to run to a cable to a display port on the monitor for 4k@60hrz. Does this seem correct? There are special cables that are hdmi + usb (for power) that go to display port. Seems rather awkward at best. I may have to either get the 12 port or consider a 2in1out HDMI switch.

Oh that’s a good idea!

I had a hub connector at work for my Dell Windows laptop that connected to everything- 2 Monitors, Keyboard, mouse, charger. It connects using the same single connector on the Ipad - the USB-C port.

When you find a gooD one that works for the Ipad, can you let us know what is is? 😀

Martin

I'm not following you. I haven't used one but according to their listed specs and pictures the 12 port has both HDMI (4k60hz) and DisplayPort (4k60hz). The 12 port also has two USB 2.0 ports and two USB 3.0 ports (10Gbs). Not sure what you mean about a custom cable. Yes, the device does seem thick but smaller in height and width than an iPhone Max.

We concur that the 12 port has the displayport. I was mentioning it seems rather largish to carry around and wont fit in some cases (1.7" thick thereabouts). As for the cable, it was a reference to being used with the 6 port.
a special cable that is hdmi + usb (for needed power) to other end that is display port. This would leave me with only
USB C port.
other option is to see if the USB A (10Gbp) port can be connected to the displayport on the monitor. My worry is that
that some hubs only have those Gen 2 USB A port useful for data only.

I'm looking into small cases than can be hooked onto a case I have to hold the 12 port if that is the only game in town (18 is too much).

Ultimately you've got to ask the manufacturer. They are so new I don't know that anyone has one yet. However, the 6-port doesn't have display port so it seems reasonable (like every other device that doesn't have an actual display port) that it would need some kind of adapter. The 12-port *does* have display port. They advertise it as meeting certain specs (1.4? I'd have to check the listing). If you have requirement (power, etc.) outside of those specs then you're looking for something really specialized and I'm not sure you'll find a perfect solution.
