I use the command for screenshots (command+shift+4) to get screenshots quite a lot. As you know, it's not very good quality.

Is there a program or a method that lets you take higher res/ higher quality screenshots? It's not necessarily of webpages. For me it's more for various parts of an audio application, of the waveform graphic in one case.

Open up preview, and from the "file" menu choose take screenshot from selection or from entire screen...It's even better in ML now, and you get just the area you want, can save in any format too. Most folks taking SS's for upload here will probably be using it.:)
 
CMD+shft+4 is the best you are going to get... as far as I know, the screenshot is an exact replica of what you see... It evens saves in a higher-quality PNG instead of a crappy JPG. I have used screenshots taken this way for professional uses for YEARSSSSS...
