Best way to go wireless?

Hi,

I'm new to the Mac World. I bought a G3 iMac on eBay for about $150.00. It worked good when I was in the states, because we had dial-up and the computer just worked fine. Now, I moved to Okinawa and there's only one phone line but AOL isn't supported all the way over here. I have a Dell and thats run by Cable modem. I'm not sure if I even have an Airport card on my G3 iMac, or if I even need it. I don't have the vaguest idea on which wireless system I need to buy. Could you please help? Thanks.

Memory: 96 MB
System Version: OS X 10.2 Jaguar
Machine Speed: 333 MHz
Bus Speed: 67 Mhz

I'm not sure if I could hook up the iMac wirelessly, or I might have to just sell it in the end. So please help, thanks, it's much appreciated.

I am pretty sure you can add an airport card to that machine if there is not one installed already. If you turn the machine upside down there is a door which gives access to the ram slots and airport card. There should be 2 ram slots and a slot for the card. The older iMacs require an adapter card and will only accept the original airport cards, not the new airport extreme.

You will also need a wireless router, 802.11b. Any one should do. I just got a linksys 4-port wireless router for $5 after rebate at BestBuy.

How do I open the bottom "door" though? And do I need the Airport card? As in, is it really necessary? Thanks.

I was thinking about setting up a wireless network at my house too and I think this might help the original poster as well.. So once you have the wireless router and the airport card in (for me an iBook) what do you need to do with the setting to help pick up the signal.

I have to figure that you cant just plug in the router and turn on the iBook (or iMac) and pick it up and be connected. So I think that you will probably have to go somewhere into a certein network setting and mess with that till you find what youre looking for.

If anyone can give me an idea on what setup besides physical setup is required, that would help a lot.

The Dell you have hooked up is that wireless or do you have a line going from your cable modem into your Dell? If thats the case then you can hardwire your iMac through the ethernet port. However if you want to go wireless as stated before you should get an Airport Card, and then you'll need to get a wireless router. The Apple Airport Base STation, Apple Extreme Base Station, or the Apple Express base station would all be optimal, however the linksys routers I have found to be good as well, i would suggest those over a D-Link wireless router.

So i guess depending if you want to go wireless you'll need an airport card, and a wireless base station to plug into your router
