Hi - I recently tried to jailbreak an iphone 3gs for my friend using pwnage tool and, to put it simply, it was a disaster. Ive lost all my confidence doing these jailbreaks now, hence asking this question on the forum.

I wanted to completely restore and update my iPhone 3G which is currently on 3.0 (already jailbroken using redsn0w and unlocked using ultrasn0w). The baseband is 04.26.08.

What software combination for jailbreaking and unlocking is best for updating my phone to 3.1.2 (i would like to restore at the same time)

Am I right in thinking that if I update to 3.1.2 jb - i lose my unlock?

Could i do the following:

Restore and Update to 3.1.2 using iTunes
Jailbreak using blackra1n
Unlock using blacksn0w?

Or...should I just download the 3.0 IPSW - install it using a restore (+option) and then use redsn0w to jb and ultrasn0w to unlock?

Thanks so much,

Vazzyb

Neither. You should restore to a pre-jailbroken 3.1.2 firmware made with PwnageTool. This will preserve your jailbreak and your baseband version, allowing you to continue to unlock using ultrasn0w (which is much more reliable than blacksn0w). If you do not have a Mac, borrow one or find someone you trust online to make a custom ipsw for you. You can download ones posted on the web, but do so at your own risk.

oh dear god :/ - - - i tried this...entered DFU mode and tried using the custom built iPhone 1,1 3.1.2 7D11 firmware but iTunes is refusing to accept the firmware to restore the phone...

That's the wrong IPSW for 3G. It needs to start with 1.2_3.1.2...

The one you used is for a 2G phone I believe.

You need to pay attention to the details if you expect to be successful.

You need to

1) Use the right firmware (iPhone1,2...), and
2) Restore in recovery mode (not DFU). a custom firmware cannot be installed in DFU mode.

Ah ok thanks very much for your patience guys - it all works now.

Push notifications seem to be disabled though (perhaps because im hacktivated?) - anyway around this?

I have an o2 sim card (but I use orange normally; o2 being the accepted carrier)

Yes, but you need to get a non-activated ipsw to restore to, then activate your phone by connecting it to iTunes using your O2 SIM.

If you want push, as stated, get an unactivated IPSW. leave o2 sim in while installing IPSW. phone will activate via sim once it reboots after install (still plugged in to iTunes). Then unlock if needed and take out o2 sim and try orange sim

Ah did that (even before you said lol!) - I'm finally my feet with this. Thanks so much for your help - I really appreciate it.
