I have a 2015 MB Pro 15" that I'm trading for a 2019 MB Pro 15". I have a bootable copy of my 2015 2 TB SSD backed up on external drive via SuperDuper. Will that work to migrate my profile? If I try to do it in Target mode, I think it will take a lot of weird adapter configurations to connect Thunderbolt 2 of the previous MB to USB c of the 2019 MB. Thank you for any replies.

I did the same migration last last year -- 2015 MBP to 2019 MBP. Although I used a Time Machine backup as source for Migration Assistant, I suspect all you would need is a TB2 cable and this adapter to be able to use Migration Assistant with 2015 MPB as source... basically, 2015 MPB TB2 > TB2/TB3 adapter > 2019 MBP TB3

BTW, these are far less expensive on eBay.

Thanks brother! glad to hear you did it successfully. How's your 2019 machine treatin you?

By the way, I may be able to do it (lol) with a FW 800 cable, and an adapter at both ends. If that works. What about doing it from the external drive though? Does that work?

FW 800 with adapters on both ends should work but will be much, much slower than TB2. In fact, the 2015 MBP has USB 3 which is faster than FW 800. A USB 3 A -to- C cable direct between the two MBPs should be a faster Migration Assistant transfer option than FW 800 w/ adapters.

Best option is TB2 w/ adapter or USB directly connected between the two MBPs.

I can use a USB cable. i have an adapter for the 2019 machine that lets me use standard USB. Is that quicker than FW cable?
