I have a really great idea for a free app that has the potential to be extremely profitable. I've been successful with several other large projects in the past, and am very confident this could be my next big thing.

What's the next step from here? Is there a site out there for iPhone developers looking for work? Do they usually take a static fee or do they want part of the profits? Im not sure of the best way to go about getting this done.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Any developer worth their salt will want paying with real cash, not equity in a worthless business.

Of course if your idea is really that good, then you might find a developer who can afford to devote some time to it who might be willing to consider sweat equity but it will have to be a really good idea.

I can't speak for other developers but I try to avoid fixed-cost projects and tend to work in an iterative manner; what this means is that whilst I can give potential clients a rough idea of cost based on my rate multiplied by the expected time, in reality its hard to estimate accurately and I tend to bill per iteration.

This does mean the client is never really committed to more than an iteration's worth of work and with good prioritization they can get something working within their budget and have the flexibility to develop their idea and add/remove features as their budget allows without worrying about a "fixed" cost and I don't have to worry so much about scope creep as I'm billing on a time and materials basis.

fund your idea properly

Go to your banker or friendly venture capital firm (e.g. iFund), and sell them the idea. If your idea is good enough, you might end up with enough investment funds to pay a team of developers and designers a juicy salary, and maybe throw in a few stock options on the side.

Or self fund, or find a school chum crazy enough to be your initial business partner (worked for Apple and Microsoft).
