Hey guys,

I have my trashcan humming along but the buyer actually wants to pick it up tomorrow in the evening, when I'm hopefully gonna receive my new cheesegrater tomorrow in the morning. I know, bad planning, but I was just glad that someone wanted to pay an OK price for the old machine and I'll be done with it.

So: What do you think is the best and easiest and safest way to set up the new machine and set everything up nicely?

What's good in my current setup, that almost all actual data is stored on external raids. But still obviously I have a lot of software with years old configurations running on the trashcan - in fact It's still running on the original installation from 2013 and flawlessly so!

I have a full time machine backup. Would you recommend setting it up from the time machine backup, or rather just set it up as new?

Is there an easy way to access the time machine backup later to get certain files back to the new machine? Like after effects scripts, keyboard settings etc...?
How would you do it?

If you have a spare drive, I would make a Carbon Copy Cloner image so you can always access whichever files later and you have a 2nd backup before you hand off your trashcan.

Thanks, that's actually a great idea. I'm creating a CCC backup right now. I guess this can be my safety net.
You think in general it's best to set up the new machine as new but to migrate user settings and stuff from time machine? Or will I break something or risk to carry over any eventual old flaws that this machine might have had?

I sold my 2009 and here's what I did:

- A time machine backup of local drive so I would have access in case I forgot to grab something. You can easily grab individual files in the time machine backup, like Premiere keyboard shortcuts, autosaves, etc, if you need to.

- Wiped the Mac Pro's drive completely and reinstalled El Capitan (the last supported OS on that machine). I then installed some apps like Garage Band and Pages (but was sure to logoff in the App Store before selling). Also installed some other freebies like Resolve.

- Sold machine! Then setup Mac Pro 2019 as new machine, and downloaded all programs. Then copied things like keyboard shortcuts and settings from TM backup

I definitely recommend NOT migrating your settings or restoring from a time machine backup. Setup the machine as new, and redownload all your software, like Adobe. You can then grab applicable plugins and adobe settings in your time machine backup of your old traschcan, and copy them into the correct folders. PM if you want to know where those folders are on your old trashcan TM backup.

Thanks, that's pretty much how I planned to do it. Thanks for the offer :) I think I pretty much got all those plugin folders etc sorted, but thanks lot.

I CAN NOT WAIT for the new baby :)))
