What's the best way to transport a 17" iMac in a car without the original packaging? For example, if you need to take it in for service. How do you prevent the screen from getting scratched, which way should you orient it, etc. It would only be a one-time thing (hopefully).

for a one-time thing, unless you're loaded, ilugger is overkill. Get a cardboard box with some bubblewrap and be careful!
I love my iLugger but agree it's overkill for a service trip.
Put a pillowcase (or even a trash bag) over the iMac to prevent scratching the screen and casing. Put a piece of stiff cardboard over the screen area afterwards, then wrap that in a blanket, and put that in a box or, if it fits, suitcase. When you arrive there, take out the imac in the pillowcase/bag and bring that in. Don't bring the blanket and the suitcase unless you're looking for attention.

Thanks for all the helpful responses! Pillowcase is a good idea - found one that fits perfectly over the machine. After I wrap it up in a blanket, towel, or bubblewrap, and put it in a box, does it matter which direction it's facing? (vertical, or horizontal with the screen facing up or down)

Vertical is best - if you can ensure it won't fall over or crash into anything. Barring that, I'd go with face down as long as you've got a stiff protective cover over the front so the screen itself haas no pressure on it - I say face down just because, whenever I put something face up, things fall on it, so I'd consider face down to be safer.Thanks for all the helpful responses!
