After reading all these threads, and commenting on a few of them, it seems that the best way to do my upgrade to ensure the greatest chance of being fully successful iis to 1-do a backup, 2-restore to factory settings, 3-upgrade to iOS 5, and 4-restore from backup. Thoughts?

Or, maybe I should just wait for the iOS 5.1 when a bunch of these issues should be fixed.

I don't believe you need to do step 2, restore to factory setting, but if you backup first it probably won't make any difference.
