Yesterday I received my MBP (15 inch 2.4 GhZ 160 Gb glossy). I purchased Parallels about a week ago (before 3.0 released). I installed it and was prompted to automatically upgrade to 3.0 which I did. I am trying to install Windows and have had some problems. I own an 2002 XP disc SP1 and a 2003 XP professional disc SP2 which may be an upgrade disc (neither is needed anymore on my Dell laptop that has been using it before I loaded Vista on it). I could not load either onto Parallels. I am willing to buy a new Windows version. Which will be better? Obviously Vista is newer but may take up more space. My primary use will be to access a work VPN. If I do buy Vista, which version is needed to run a VPN. At Circuit City they said I will need the Business or Ultimate version. Is this true? Did they really not include this capability in the Home or Home premium versions? Finally, which versions(s) have been working on Paralells 3.0 (or earlier). Thanks so much in advance for advice on which software to use/buy and on any tips on installation.

I'm in a similar position myself and look forward to other views on the subject. However, from the research I have done already I have discovered that only the Business and Ultimate versions of Vista can be installed, see:

Also, so far as Windows XP is concerned you have to have SP2 for it to work. Not sure whether an upgrade only disc will do it though. Anyone know the answer to this?

Actually... it has to do with Virtualization more than anything. Microsoft made it illegal to virtualize anything other than the Enterprise or the Ultimate version.
You might try Windows 2000... if your VPN software supports it, you can probably pick it up for pretty cheap nowadays and it is the best (IMHO) version of Windows to date. Hey, it's what I use on my computer. When I have to.

Business isn't the same as Enterprise. So, no. But if you upgrade today to the special "Windows Vista Ultra Shiny Choco-Muffin New with No Trans Fat" version you can eat it and not feel guilty. Only requires 1GB of your daily RAM intake.

I would go with windows 3.1 - it has unparalled conectivity and functionality.
In all seriousness, I think you'd be better with xp , vista is visually nice, but it is a much bigger resource hog (which you don't need if you're running in parallels). Also vista support with some windows software is lacking. as an added bonus xp is now cheap now vista is out

Newegg are selling winx xp pro oem for $139 , you'd need to buy a piece of hardware e.g. a cable or screw or mouse at the same time to be allowed to buy it.
If you want to download it and don't want to go to the shops to buy it , you can download a pirate copy <hold your complaints> , put it on a cd, install and then (depending on your morals) go the microsoft website, fail the windows genuine advantage check, which will then give you the option to purchase a legitimate serial from microsoft over the net and legalise your illegal copy there and then, they'll even post your the box cd and serials in the post! This might not be so cheap though (unless you're a pirate)
