Do not fall for it. I bought one last week from BB thinking that everything is going to be fine by now, but I just returned it today.
It suffered from the pad button not registering every click and the heat and core shutdowns were a killer even though the processors were locked at 0.8 Ghz.
I got it to be my to go machine since I already have a 3.06 iMac but it turned out to be an "epic fail" just like the previous MBAs I had since it was lunched back in February.

What if you get the extended warranty from Best Buy? The Macbook Air has some issue and you wait until the Rev 1 Macbook Airs are out of inventory.
Then can you exchange it for the new ones or do they just give you your money back.

Bestbuy would probably try to repair it, break it and offer you a new one, only if theyre out of stock in the whole state for ever.
You read my mind BornAgainMac. Best buy is basically out of Air everywhere except a store here or there and if something goes wrong they are selling Air 2.0 so..... still im torn
If you spent $1299 for the closeout, you can be sure you will not get the newest model without paying the difference between what you paid and what the new model is selling for.
Wouldn't that still be a good deal. Get the air at 1299, if you have problems you get 100% credit of the price you paid just pay the difference for a new Air 2.0? You wouldnt lose money in that type of deal.

I sat on the fence reading all the forums about Air from the start. Finally when the r.2 came out I thought I would jump - but then I started counting cash and thought for something I am not sure is great yet, that's a lot of $$ to spend. So went to BB and got the 1299 r.1 and love it. I have had zero problems so far: not overheating, no shut downs, sits flat on the table, no problems with the hinges, just great!! So I would recommend it if cash is tight and you still need to have an AIR!!!

Because the air has a very poor cooling system, the processors run at a slower speed than advertised when they start getting hot from doing to much work! This in turn lowers the temperature at which they operate, fetching the overalll temp down so that they can fire back up to a higher speed again.
That is how i understand it at least!
Thanks for this thread. I just asked in another thread whether I Should go with the $1299 previous version of the MacBook Air, but glad to read the warnings on the potential problems with the old version.
Now to figure out if there's anything better I can do in terms of price for getting the newest, cheapest MacBook Air. I'm expecting to pay $1699 w/ my education discount. Last month, my brother got the new 2.4ghz MacBook for $1499 w/ a $100 educational discount, but also got a $100 printer free after rebate (what actually happened though was that there were problems delivering the printer so we got to just keep the $100 rebate check, making the final price of the MacBook $1400+tax. Not bad)

For what it's worth: I bought a first-gen MBA (hard drive) at Best Buy last Friday and have been using it non-stop since. The first one they gave me wouldn't even boot up after I got it home--just kept repeating three loud beeps--but they replaced that, so the new new one is the one I've been using. Fans came on once only, the first night, while watching an iTunes rental movie. Since then, I disabled Dashboard and have watched DVDs on external superdrive and YouTube and Hulu and have had no trouble whatever. Doesn't run particularly hot. 'Course, I live in Maine, so we're not exactly tropical here. But overall my experience has been overwhelmingly positive and the machine is overwhelmingly smooth. Sweet!
