I appologize in advance for the novel, but here goes:

I've only ever owned one cell phone (SE47 "Slider") on the Verizon network. The 2 year contract is up in June.

I want to switch to Cingular (we've had some bad Verizon experiances) on a family plan, probably the cheapest (550 minutes), which I will share with my Mom (we currently have 400 minutes split between us).

I really want the SLVR because my Ipod is broken, and it looks like a great phone, despite some of the problems I have heard about it. My other phone option is to wait for the V3i, which, according to the guy at the Cingular store is supposed to come out at the end of May, but should be a month late (his words). I've decided that unless there is a miracle, the V3i will be outside my price range.

At BestBuy right now there is a deal on the SLVR- $99.99 with a 2 year contract. From Cingular with the same plan the SLVR is $199.99. I assume that there is a *possibility* of a pricedrop from Cingular on the SLVR in the near future, but that is only a guess. So, finally, to my question: If I buy from BestBuy, is Cingular still responsible for the phone? I.E, if it breaks, who do I run to?

I wonder because my current phone had to be replaced (for $50!) because the screen cracked on its own (honestly I don't know how), and now the battery only holds a half hour charge. (My mom's had to be replaced because of a faulty battery as well...another $50)

On a final note (this is it, I promise!) does anyone have any reason why I shouldn't buy this phone? This will last me two years, and I want to make sure I get the best possible phone.

I don't trust the BBs, CCs, etc for phones. I 'd rather go direct, then there's one less excuse for the wireless company to blow you off (Sorry, you need to go back to BB, etc.).

in my area, Walmart's (believe it or not) prices are ALWAYS lower. 64.99 for the current version of the razr... i was pissed because i just bought my wife the black one at the Cingular store for 149.

As a former BB employee (i know, i hang my head in shame even though it was just for a disposable summer job) dont buy from them. Cingular will be much easier to deal with on repairs than BB.

Thats what I was worried about. I guess I'll just wait till late June when the V3i is out and hope for a SLVR price drop... $200 just isn't going to happen.

>>> I am still not sure if BB or Cingular will be in charge of repairs if you buy from BB

If you buy from Best Buy, they will NEVER be responsible for any repairs... no matter what or how. They are not someone you want to rely on for anything.

"Best Buy" and "responsible" are not words to be used together...

Yes, I have a reason why you shouldn't buy the phone. Cingular. A good phone is useless with a crappy network. Cingular's service is horrible and I stronly advise against them. I'm still locked in with them for another 7 months, and as soon as my contract is up (like that day, if possible) I'm switching to another provider. Their service is that bad.

And I believe, if you must go with them, Cingular is responsible for repairs. But repairs aren't a simple "go into a store and walk out with a new phone." It's more of a "call a 1800 number, wait on hold for an hour, talk to someone in India who speaks no English and set up an exchange and wait a week for UPS to deliver the new phone"

i myself used to be a cell rep in BB. and i can say that cingular is reponsible for all repair and so forth after the first 30 days. u can get the phone there and have no issue. just dont let them sign you up for extra jazz and stuff. tell them u jsut want to do the switch and ge the phone. from there on.. cingular will take care of u.

PS i also used to work for cingular... so thats my 2 cents

Hm. I think I'll go into BB to find out but thanks for the info.

And to yg17, I think the service is different depending on your location. Verizon always has had good service but their Customer Service was the worst I had ever experianced.

I'm not sure switching to Cingular to improve customer service is a wise choice. I can't vouch for anyone else, but I switched away from them this year for that reason.
