Beta 2 install seems stuck on grey blank screen

pressed install and Mac restarted and showed a install bar with 18 minutes so I walked away And left it. Came back and found it with a blank grey screen which has stayed for 5 mins at least. I can move the cursor. I don't hear any disc access.

Is this normal ? Should I leave it longer or restart it ?

Why am I stupid enough to install new system software when I have tons to do tonight and am leaving on holiday tomorrow ?

Weirdly my boot camp partition works perfectly. However neither normal startup not recovery mode get there, both going to grey screen.

Internet recovery mode won't do anything. It starts up but the verify and whatnot are greyed out. Is this because it starts up as lion when I do Internet recovery mode as its a 2011 iMac ?

Trying safe mode but that doesn't get past the loading bar getting 60 percent. Think this is about when it normally goes grey.

Any ideas ? Internet recovery will reinstall lion is this my best bet ?

weird. left safe mode running for ages and all of a sudden it started up (albeit like a slide show). once i logged in it switched back to installing el capitan, guess it had crashed during install. now working fine. phew.
