Does anyone see a GPU upgrade within 3 months? the current GPU is the ONLY thing holding me back :(

Or should I get a 24" and upgrade when MXM becomes more accessible?

Or should I wait a while and save up a lot of $$$ and get a Mac Pro with the x1900 or w/e is out at the time?

I will be using this machine primarily as a gaming machine... Oh and 3D Animation.

I wouldn't bank on it. Considering the iMacs were revved very recently, I wouldn't expect to see any updates until around Leopard release time, if even that soon (Spring '07).

This would be my guess as well.

JPT, the Mac Pro with the ATI Radeon X1900XT is probably the ideal machine for you since you plan on using it for gaming. That said, the 24" iMac with the 7600GT seems to do well for gaming. :)

I know it does very well it's just future games I am scared about... Such as Crysis. I want to be able to put those types of games on 100% full!

If by 100% full you mean all settings on high running at native resolution then I think an iMac is always going to struggle.

A Mac Pro is probably your best bet or... dare I say it... a PC. ;)

Yeah... I am stuck between a $2,000 custom built pc (by me) and a Mac... I was originally going to get a MBP but now I don't need a notebook so I was going to get an iMac, but then Crysis caught my attention... The Mac Pro is a bit expensive... But it would be nice to have OS X...

I wish Apple would allow at least some custom configurations... Not full on custom computers but a good variety of Apple certified/approved parts I could choose from...

I think that if you wanted OSX go for the Mac Pro with the 1900. But like you said if gaming is the only thing important to you and you wouldn't mind running windows, go for a PC with even better graphics than the Mac Pro, such as cards with Crossfire Graphics or SLI.

Honestly, if you wanna run Crysis maxed at high res, you're going to need a high-end SLI setup. Sad but true. While the newer Macs are more than satisfactory for a lot of gaming (CS: Source and WoW, etc), they still aren't any replacement for a high-end gaming PC.

Sounds like you and I are in the same boat. I love the new flat panel iMacs and 24" sounds absolutely awesome. It MAY be possible to stick a PC-acquired MXM module in it and use the Titan.kext hack to run on OS X. I am still waiting for someone to try that.

For the Mac Pro, if you select the 2.0 GHz Xeons instead of the default 2.66 you can save yourself about $270. On the other hand, the FB-DIMMs are server parts, more expensive than DDR2 RAM, and from what I hear are bad for gaming (I suppose the extra buffers slow them down?)

I'll have the money for a new Mac in a few weeks, and I still can't decide which I want to get.

(makes me want to kick Steve Jobs until he gives me a gaming Mac for a reasonable price...Come on Steve! Thousands and thousands of people want a midrange headless desktop Mac that has a 16x PCI-E slot with enough space and power connectors for a top-end gaming card, full size HD and Superdrive, and a Conroe Core 2 Duo, come on just do it already!)
