Better macro shots possible for 13 mini?

I have difficulties taking macro shots with my 13 mini. It's hit or miss, usually miss. Why is that?

The stock camera is more or less hopeless and the apps Camera+ and its derivative Macro doesn't do a particularly better job. The built in magnifier does a good job viewing close up, but not taking pictures. Sometimes a screenshot is better from the magnifier, but I don't think that's a solution, really.

Any thoughts? Am I missing something? A better app, perhaps? A better phone..?

The UW lens lacks autofocus, which is what’s apparently required for macro on the Pro models.

That's too bad. With the UW lens on my 13 mini, I'm coming a bit closer. But not that much.
