I've always heard that it is better to leave your desktop computers on b/c turning them on and off reduces their life span.

Should you try not to turn your MBP off and just put it to sleep, or is okay to turn it on and off? Whether that implies turning it off several times throughout the day, or maybe just before one goes to bed for the night.

Sleep is nice, leave your MBP open in your room at night (opt+cmd+eject) and the sleep light is adjusted by the ambient light sensor. I do love sleep, I rack up massive up times... heh, really big... but sleep is better than cold start any day.

Nothing will happen to your notebook if you use sleep extensively. It saves time, and makes your life easier, so why not do it? That said, I usually turn mine off before bed and turn it on in the morning (what can I say, Al Gore is making me feel guilty:eek:). Whenever I don't use it during the day, it's asleep.

This topic comes up quite often so a search might get you some answers quicker next time.

Remember that the periodical maintenance tasks are automatically run during the early hours of the morning. If the machine is shut down these tasks will be forgotten but if you run 10.4.2 or later and you sleep your machine at night, they'll automatically run the next time your machine wakes up. It's a good idea to run these tasks so if you insist on shutting your machine down overnight, then think about running the tasks manually using Terminal or a third party app. :)

Weeks may pass without even restarting my Mac. And I really must say that turning my Mac off is an uncommon event.

So shutting down at night is a bad idea:confused: Darn you Al Gore (shakes fist).

Nah, it's not bad. It juste means you might want to run the tasks manually. It's pretty easy to do from Terminal.

Code:
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly

Thanks for that:) I told you you know almost everything(about Macs);)

Anacron for MacOS

Anacron runs the periodic daily, weekly and monthly tasks on your Mac even if the machine (a laptop, for example) spends much of its time asleep or switched-off. Anacron silently checks when you reboot and every sixty minutes while the computer is running to see if the various periodic scripts are overdue, and runs them if necessary. The advantage of Anacron over many other solutions to this issue is that it runs as a proper Unix background process, requires no user intervention, and uses the regular periodic scripts, including local additions or modifications.

Shouldn't the issue with turning computer on and off often be with the HDDs? In that case having them sleep (the HDDs, but I guess the machine to) isn't better is it?

But just get a new hdd if it dies ;/
