I'm getting the new Mac mini 2014 for Christmas. My mac laptop is from 2011 and I'm due for an upgrade. I'm planning on customizing it to get these specs:
-3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7
-16gb RAM
-Intel Iris Graphics
I don't need any high FPS as this is mostly a side thing, but the occasional gaming would be a break. For reference my old 2011 13inch MBP with Intel 3000 HD graphics, 4 gb RAM, and 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 and was able to run Battlefield 3 with 20-30 FPS on low. Made it unplayable so I never really bothered, but with this new Mac mini what do you think I will get? Obviously I will be on Bootcamp.

Unless you're going to be performing very CPU intensive tasks and need to shave seconds off your projects, the i7 upgrade is a waste of money.

The Iris GPU is an improvement over the HD3000, but you're still going to be relegated to playing games at 720p resolution and low details to maintain a framerate that borders on playable. See this video for a gameplay example. It's on a MacBook Pro with Retina display with the same GPU.
