Here’s an essay and a half… In the past year I’ve went from an iPhone SE & MacBook Pro 2017 nTB base model. This was a fantastic setup as I was at university in middle year. In my final year I had gotten a job where I used my MBP as a key tool to impress them doing admin, marketing and web design work. It truly was the key to my income and future job! Fantastic.

I had some issues with the MBP and it had new displays put in by Apple a few times. Eventually, this got annoying and I complained. Apple offered a refund or a contribution from me to trade for a 2018 MBP TouchBar 512GB model. My dream configuration, stupidly, I went for it. This was an amazing upgrade, quad-core, more storage, beautiful machine. The ultimate Mac in my eyes. But come February, I had more issues of the same kind (with the display) and coupled with the fact I had over £2,000 on my person at university and to/from work it was all too much pressure, and the risk of it coming out of warranty and having a serious issue. I parted with it before it was too late. Also upgraded the SE to an XR at this time.

I opted for a Mac Mini to use with my home desk setup and got a setup at work. I travelled with the 6-core box and it was generally good. I then got an iPad Air 3 for me and my gf at launch earlier this day. iPad for everything, Mac Mini for work and occasionally for big assignments at home. I would even leave the Mac mini in the office for convenience. At work, I got a bit fed up with moving between two offices (one had a desk setup, other did not) so I tried using the iPad using Canva, Affinity and Office / PDF Expert to do my duties, which it was capable of doing. But one day, in May under pressure with eyes on my screen I was asked to do a simple adjustment of text size on a brochure. Affinity kept crashing. I also couldn’t work with video as I couldn’t download an MP3 track from the internet to use with it (now solved by iOS 13 ftr). I had it! I wanted a real PC, real power and portability. I didn’t want to go back to the MBP or a lesser Mac - especially at the price.

I bought a ThinkPad X280 to fit into my jobs Windows environment better too (I had introduced SharePoint 365 to the company). This did okay, and as I’m an ecosystem freak I moved all my stuff to OneDrive and Microsoft services. Windows 10 seemed refreshing and new and exciting, the hardware was great and also immune to my particular issues on the MBP - though definitely no competition performance wise. I even went as far as selling my XR for an S10+ to get better integration with Windows and Android than what iOS can offer currently - integration and seamless ecosystem was my favourite thing about the Mac and iPhone setup.

I hated the Samsung, despite it being a great device and the ThinkPad and Windows 10 didn’t feel nice to own. Even though, again it was good hardware, capable software… I used Ubuntu for a month or two before selling the it. I returned the Samsung under the 30 day policy, got a full refund. Bought another XR (I know!) 128GB. I sold the ThinkPad and the Mac Mini and with the cash got a good deal on a 12" brand new MacBook from John Lewis here in the UK for £800 plus two year guarantee.

Here’s the important bit: My job where I needed my own computer and to be able to do marketing (video, photo, creative pursuits), web design (graphics, mass filesystem use, full web browsers and testing environments) was over. They couldn’t deliver on a promise of employment post-university so I left. It was a great year of experience, but web design and marketing for me weren’t were I wanted to continue. Admin, boring as it might be, is the path I’m now on.

So now, my lineup is a bright yellow iPhone XR 128GB and a nearly-new one month old MacBook 12" Silver 256GB.

My current job is Admin only and they issue a work machine. Not only am I not allowed to use my own machine, but can’t even use it at home to access work files - the work machine must come home with me for this purpose (clear desk policy and all that). So I have a steady, dependable and capable work machine to use anytime around the clock. Back when I had my MBP, it was mission critical. There is no longer a need for me to have my own capable machine. Phew, what a relief.

That’s the big change in my use case and its demands. Now, I come home and my Mac is all setup how I want, I back it up, do some browsing, consuming content, news, email, budgets for myself, photo editing to share with my gf. My needs are so light. I read on MPU Talk and other forums and watch YouTubers talk about tech and yet I have no real need or use for my own, I considered upgrading Parallels but I have no real need for it. I miss my powerful MBP for it’s sheer sex appeal, but again, I’d have no use for it. Furthermore, when with family and friends it’s nearly anti-social to whip out the laptop, it closes me off and steals my focus! Using it in bed also seems like I’m not engaged with my partner. So I’m thinking of selling the MacBook now while it’s valuable and so it doesn’t go to waste on me.

I loved the iPad lifestyle, how it could be thrown into the car door bin and brought anywhere. It could be taken out in a café as we searched for tickets for stuff and held up in bed to watch movies (dead arm included!). It fitted into my everyday more, and unlike my MBP it didn’t feel like I was spending more dreaded time on this thing after a long day of also using it at work. As I mentioned above, it let me down in my last job, but I’ll never work there again nor apply for jobs with duties like that. And if I did, most firms issue machines anyway!

The new plan is to go iPad only in my personal life. I’ve done this before with an iPad 2 in 2011, an iPad in 2017 and recently depended a lot on it with that Air 3. I know what I’m in for. And, I’ll have this i5 W10 15" laptop nearby if needed.

I’d love another Air 3, but it’s getting so close to October that new iPads, particularly the budget model, are to be revealed. I’m tempted to buy a cheap 9.7" 2018 model now, but having had that Air 3 I feel it’ll not be the nice experience I remember. I’m going to hold off until the October event until I can see if the budget model will fit my needs. Only tempting proposition is Apple’s current free headphones offer on the Air 3 until end of September, I’m seeking a replacement for my B&W C5’s (5 years old!) and this time, over ear… but I head bad things about Beats.

The MacBook is still listed on eBay UK, if I can get what I paid for it £800 for a machine that’s usually £1250 I’ll be happy, before it de-values severely and gets more cosmetically used and more battery cycle counts.

In the meantime, I’m going to use my iPhone XR. It sits at my work desk 9-5 on a wireless charging dock, navigates me and plays music in the car wherever I go, and generally punches above its weight as a ‘computer’. It’ll be fine for a few weeks! To say maybe I’ll not need an iPad is a little silly, as the big screen is undoubtable needed for even personal tasks like writing a letter or doing other light tasks beyond the scope of a phone in the long term.

Has anybody else had a dramatic change in workflow and made similar ‘downsizes’ and lived to not regret it? Do you go iPad only etc? Can you tell me what you advise in my case?

TL;DR?

Tl;dr..

Should I go back to iPad + iPhone XR only setup for myself as I no longer depend on my machines for work and will be issued a Windows 10 laptops (for the odd 'need a real computer' task including full office). Because my needs and time to sit and enjoy my 12" MB 2017 are so little that I feel the Mac is going to waste and an iPad would fit into my non-work computing life better ~ 'leisurely computing'

I think so. Although I've got a Mac Pro in my home office and my wife's 2014 MBP for any MacOS necessities. But the truth is those are few and far between with my iPad Pro 11" running iPadOS.

Wow....step back and take a deep breath. As you have stated in previous posts, your quick decisions and whims and lack of giving enough time to serious moves have cost you substantially. To be honest, I have some difficulty thinking that you really know what you want and your approach seems a little carefree based on your statement - "I miss my powerful MBP for it’s sheer sex appeal.."
If this is an important concern for you, then I just shake my head in bewilderment and offer you the best of luck.

If you hardly have time now, you won’t be any better off with an iPad in my opinion. Try to simplify even more by maybe just having the phone would be my advice.

I’m not sure what else to add, you know iPad already, there won’t be dramatic changes other than some multitasking and Files app changes in iPad OS.

I hope things are working out for you.
- First MacBook Pro had problems.
- Second MacBook Pro had problems.
- You felt “pressure” carrying around an E2,000 machine.
- Then your job didn’t work out as promised.
- Now you have a job you said is boring.

On a positive note, your keyboard is working really well.

I understand where you're coming from... I've tried the iPhone + iPad route, especially with iPadOS too! Didn't work. Thats just me though. You sound convinced with the iPad with your past use cases! iPad is meant for people who love iOS and want to run it on a bigger screen.

Not an essay but yes. Ditched my laptop 3 years ago. My phone is a Note 9 that’s my main work device. I can actually sign pdf documents on it and email them back. Same as my iPad Pro 11. Which solves 90% of my computing needs.
Rarely turn on my Gaming PC.

And mobile communication is key Note 9 acts as a hub, and tethers LTE Data to my iPad Pro even when there is no WiFi nearby. So they are two essential tools that work together.

Way too in-depth. We don't need to know about your diary entries and life story about how Apple influenced (or in the end, didn't) your job prospects.

What is the primary advantage you see in going entry-level iPad over your 12” MacBook? The 2” drop in screen size? What is the problem you’re trying to solve? Do you feel like the monetary value of the MacBook outweighs its current use case and therefore you’d like unload it while it has value and go a slightly less expensive route with a cheaper iPad? (Granted we don’t know what prices will look like on the new iPad yet).

I mean it sounds like both can do the things you want just fine, though for things like writing, you’ll likely want / need some external accessories for the iPad. Maybe the iPad can do it slightly cheaper and be a bit more portable in some use cases. Otherwise that MacBook is extremely portable for what it is.

I think so. Although I've got a Mac Pro in my home office and my wife's 2014 MBP for any MacOS necessities. But the truth is those are few and far between with my iPad Pro 11" running iPadOS.

I think having that security of a full computer OS nearby for when the moment arises is a definite for the iPad lifestyle as of 2019 and probably for a long time yet.

That's a totally valid point. But I want to highlight that the change in devices was based on real issues I had with them and trying to achieve the best combination of tools for my job as it changed too. The iPad + Mini combination was a 'best of both' kind of setup, but commuting with the mini between office sites didn't work as smooth as planned.

As for the MacBook Pro sex appeal statement, that's not the sole reason why I miss it, but I was trying to communicate how it was the machine of my dreams for the better part of a decade and I was blown away by it in every aspect. But, at the same time did not need it ~ over kill. Despite how nice it was to own such a machine, it came with the fear of carrying £2,000 on my person too.

But point taken, waiting and seeing it out couldn't do any harm. FYI, before this I had a mid-2012 MBP from 2014-2017 and would have kept it longer had the keyboard not gave out, that was a good time and one hell of a machine.

Well the times I do have now, e.g. after work, at Starbucks, in bed, end of the day, commuting occasionally by plane, sitting on the beach on a day off.. these moments, an iPad would feel like the better device to casually take out, get stuff done or consume content and put away. Largely due to it being less delicate. I mean, iPad's seem to last forever (until the software makes them obsolete), the Mac on the other hand yeah has about 8 years of support but can be compromised by a bad keyboard, a cracked display is a much bigger job / cost to fix, logic board failure seems higher likely.

If my Mac sells now, I am planning on waiting until the October event. During this time, I'll be iPhone XR only. That'll soon show me how useful iOS can be. And if my only complaint is the screen being small, I'll know my answer. Thanks.

But also point taken, if i'ts about time, then the same time to use the device isn't going to change.

I felt like it's risky to have that machine in a backpack, possibly stolen or damaged at double the cost of the computers I had owned before. With Apple Care, it was over £2,000!

The job thing wasn't such a big deal, my new job is better if not more 'normal' than the last. There's certainly less pressure on me, and I get issued a machine. I'm in a better place now! Lol, though obviously using a W10 PC on Excel compared to Affinity software on the Mac, marketing platforms online etc... one might make the observation it's comparatively more boring. But I'm happy, if that's what you're concerned about ;-) lol

The keyboard works well... for now. It was a sticky key on the high end MBP FYI.

I understand where you're coming from... I've tried the iPhone + iPad route, especially with iPadOS too! Didn't work. Thats just me though. You sound convinced with the iPad with your past use cases! iPad is meant for people who love iOS and want to run it on a bigger screen.

It hasn't worked for me in the past for specific reasons based on my job / life / studies etc and I certainly know it's limitations. It's not perfect, and it's screwed me over before. But now my needs are so light it seems viable again.

I'd be doing the same with my XR and iPad, as I do with my Mac now, tethering through 4G. Seems redundant to have to pay more for a 4G computing device on top of a phone and pay double the subscription. Here in the UK, tablet data plans are so much less than the same monthly payment for a smartphone plan (which has calls and texts too).

I bet you're the same kinda guy who comments saying "didn't explain your use case enough. no context" ...

If I posted with a list of device changes over the past year, with zero context what good would that be? (not to you, to the others genuinely offering their advice). If I sold a device, it's important I tell you why it let me down or didn't work in a specific scenario. I'm not asking for careers advice, that's all fine. I hope the post didn't cause you to have a bad day, that'd be a shame.

You've summed it up. The £1250 machine being used rarely seems a waste. But also, picture using a 12" MacBook on the beach some day off, or out in the back yard. Sand blowing etc. It's just asking for trouble. While the MB is so portable and light, it's delicate. And I personally think the keyboard stories are overblown , but, even considering that can affect any laptop, I think I'd maybe be using it where an iPad might excel better.

The cost saving is a side-benefit. If I sell this for say, £800 and buy a refurbished base iPad for £300 from Apple's site, that's £500 that can go into my savings. I'm not even too worried about how long the iPad'll last in terms of the extreme. I'm sure it'll last and perform well for this year, next year and maybe the year after. But at that price, say a new model is introduced, in a years time it's so much easier to upgrade should it offer a true benefit.

The iPad OS with a keyboard and mouse will change the macbook pro?

I don't understand your reply :-S

Another TL;DR? :p

Yes and no. It really depends on what you do. I really very, very rarely pick up the laptop (aside to fix it for my wife) and only use the desktop if I'm already sitting down to use my very-specific, honed-over-years workflow. I don't think you can dismiss this as "a definite for the iPad lifestyle" as a general rule. Especially after iPad OS is stable I think it makes sense for many people, I just I need to be transparent about my

Sounds like you’ve got a problem there mate. Plenty of others found it okay and offered good replies.
