I currently have a early macbook 2008, 2.1GHz, 1GB ram. and im wondering if the base imac is A LOT quicker?

yes the iMac is a bit faster , but normal tasks like emailing browsing , office you wont notice it , only if you do a lot of movie rendering or such things , then yes you will see the difference in speed ,but the question is if you need the bit extra speed or if you prefer the portability ,
if i would be you and had a MacBook from 2008 and if you got apple care for it i would just get a nice 21.5 inch monitor and connect it to the Macbook and wait for next year just before apple care runs out and sell it with a couple month apple care left , as you get more for it if there is a bit apple care left over

Depends on what you do with it. In basic tasks it may not be that much faster but things that require some computing power will be faster. The extra RAM helps a lot as well

ah okay thanks, would there be a big difference in playing games and using fireworks/photoshop?

Yes in those apps you would see quite a substantial performance gain. If you upgraded the RAM on the iMac to 8 or 12GB even more performance gain. For basic web surfing, email, MS Office type functions the gain would be very minimal. However anything related to 3D graphics you would benefit by more computing power and more RAM.
