I'm sure you guys hear this alot, but bare with me...

I just bought a 14" iBook notebook last night...

I HAVE NOT used an Apple since I had one that was 25MHz and had a 1X cd-rom...

What do I need to know?? I know that is a very broad question...but what are the MUST HAVE programs, etc...and how do you go about installing them?

Also, this is a brand new laptop, why am I running the previous version of MacOS? Didn't the new version just come out? Kinda pissed about that...

Any other helpful info would be greatly appreciated. If you need any further info, just ask ;)

Who did you buy your iBook from? If you have OSX 10.3 (Panther) you should qualify for Apples Up To Date program, which means for about $10 you get the latest version of OSX.

Whoever you got it from though, just keep complaining to until they offer to give you the latest version for free :)

I would have a good look arounf this forum. There are quite a few 'sticky' threads are there to help. I know there is definately a 'favourite apps' thread and a 'favourite freeware' thread, along with lots of other things. If I would you have a look at the 'sticky' threads in some of the catorgories, you should find a lot of interesting stuff.

I drove from San Antonio to Austin, TX last night to go to Fry's Electronics...I guess I will need to hassle them over the phone and once they agree, then I will drive back up there :)

Thanks for the tip

Are you sure you didn't get ripped off by Fry's?! The new 14" iBooks should come shipped/pre-installed w/ Tiger. Maybe you got one of the last revision iBooks. Check your RAM and your processor. How many GHz? I really hope you didn't get ripped off!

Absolutely - check your specs against these. In order to find your specs, click on the Apple in the menu bar, then click About This Mac.

If you were sold the previous incarnation, while paying the full price for the new model without knowing, then I think you have fair grounds for a return and a replace. If on the other hand it was on 'special offer' as it was clearance, then thats an indication that it wasnt the latest model.

If you have been tricked, raise hell! Keep complaining till they replace it, and try and blag something free out of them for the inconvenience. If you raise hell politely and calmly, then theres no reason you cant get what you want. Just dont take it out on the store clerks. If possible speak to their manager and take it up with him.

I love complaining :)

I bought my powerbook 2 days after Tiger was released. It came with Panther pre-installed, but Apple was kind enough to include a Tiger DVD inside the box :D . Your iBook should've had Tiger pre-installed, but you should probably check the discs that were included to see if there's a tiger dvd in there.

Mostly you will be dragging and dropping to you Applications folder (although it doesn't necesarilly have to be that folder).

I was wondering how long it would take for you to notice this thread. ;)

Hehe, yeah I should really ask a mod for a sticky but I always seem to forget. I'll update it a bit as soon as I'm done with my thesis and then I'll ask for a sticky. If anyone wants to pm any mod and ask for a sticky... feel free, I might forget. :)
