I have a big photo library that would eat up all my iCloud if I activate sync on my Mac
Since the library is big it is on an external hard drive

In latest macOS library that are on external drive are set as not primary ( as far as I know ) limiting actions available
I can't sync via cable albums with my iPhone because it is allowed only with primary

The only work around that I found it is to create a shared album and manually add photo to albums
Af far as I know it is not possible to create a shared smart album that includes all photo of last xx days

To use shared library it is required that iCloud Sync for Photo it is enabled, so I guess I would need to switch between 2 library the main and my external drive one
I don't think it would be possible to open multiple libraries

Large iCloud Photos Libraries can be located on external drives...mine is. (80k pics/570GB), but of course you do need to be on a suitable iCloud Storage plan.

Syncs fine with other devices.
