Hi - im absolutely ******** myself atm - i dont know what ive done wrong

I tried jailbreaking a friends device for him using Pwnage Tool 3.1.5 - a newly bought iPhone 3GS with the 3.1.2 firmware downloaded from a reliable source (the ipsw) - the custom restore has just left the phone completely black screened and I get an error message when I try and update to the original software - please help :/

Most likely the phone has the new bootrom and cannot be jailbroken using PwnageTool. You should have read the instructions on the Dev Team's site...they're very clear about that.

In any case, the phone is now stuck in DFU mode. You will have to connect it to iTunes and restore to the 3.1.3 firmware. The phone will not be jailbreakable or unlockable for the foreseeable future.

Sorry for your situation, but there is a good life lesson here. We see so many of these "I've screwed up my father-in-laws, wife's, friends, mom's Phone".

My advice is if you can't afford to buy them a new one, stay clear of these situations. Too often, as in your case, they turn out poorly.

Unless you have a safety net (SHSH blobs or the cash to buy them a new one) in my humble opinion, these situations should be avoided.

Good luck telling your friend ! Hope this works out.

Ah ok ive got it back to 3.1.3.

Lets say he returns his phone and gets the refund (they will do that because all they will see is a new phone with the 3.1.3 firmware from iTunes)...

is there anyway to jailbreak and unlock the new boot iPhone 3Gs? What program would be best to use?

Not unless it was previously jailbroken and SHSH blobs saved.

Only if it is running iPhone OS < 3.1.3. If it were on 3.1.2, for instance, you could jailbreak using redsn0w or blackra1n...but it would be a tethered jailbreak. Read the thread I linked you to above.
