Big Safari Problem, Need Help!!!

OK, well I'm having a very troubling problem with Safari on my RevD 12" Powerbook (10.4.1). This started just a few days ago. Whenever I try to browse a web page (any page), it will load 70-80% of the page and hang. Sometimes clicking the X and then the refresh symbol will get it to work. Other times, it just doesn't. I haven't installed any software in weeks.

Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? Is it possible to re-install just Safari? Thanks!
 
Have you tried FF or Camino, to make sure that this is a Safari issue and not a network issue?

Also, do you have pithhelmet installed, or are you using a custom CSS file?

If you quit Safari and restart it, does the problem go away temporarily?

all good point and definitely worthwhile to look into, have you tried clearing the cache in Safari or resetting it? might also help
 
I have tried using FF, and I get the same problems on the same webpages. The weird thing is, it doesn't affect all pages or all the time. Some, like eBay, are not working at all, any time. Some, like MR, work sometimes very well. I keep getting timed out errors for most web pages or it will load incompletely.

I just installed Java 5.0. Didn't help anything. I am not using pithhelmet (whatever that is...??). I am running Little Snitch. Even when it is disabled, though, I still get the errors.

Any more ideas? Thanks.

edit: I also emptied the cache.
 
The two major possibilities sound like there is something causing Javascript to execute slowly or poorly (I especially suspect this, because it had been a big problem with eBay and past versions of Safari and maybe FF too), and/or there are certain adservers at pages you go to for which download is hanging or timing out....

If FF does the same thing, then I seriously doubt any setting that is part of Safari is going to fix it. :(

I guess a really, really longshot is to run the cron maintenance tasks, repair permissions and reboot, just for the heck of it. I wouldn't hold my breath, though.

Did anything else in your hardware setup change? Is it possible your ISP made some kind of change?
 
I hadn't thought about repairing permissions. I'll give that a try. I suspect Java as well, seeing as it only happens sometimes on some pages. I've tried rebooting a few times, no dice.

What are the cron maint. tasks? Is it bad to have more than one version of Java installed? I've currently got 1.3.1, 1.4.2, and the recently installed 5.0 (though that one does not show up as "installed" by 'Safari -> Help -> Installed Plugins').

No other changes in hardware or with the ISP. My PC laptop using the same DSL line has no issues at all. Ironic...?

I don't think that this is a Java problem. Javascript is a different beast. The JVM / JRE stuff doesn't even launch unless you navigate to a site with an applet on it, and it doesn't sound like you are. And it is perfectly okay to have multiple Java releases on the computer.

The cron maintenance tasks are tasks that are normally run automatically on a daily, weekly and monthly basis (three sets of tasks) by the OS, but sometimes, on a notebook that is frequently asleep, they get missed. They do things like rotate log files and clean buffers that sometimes can improve slow performance kinds of issues. You can force them by typing the following at terminal:

sudo periodic daily weekly monthly

(all one line; you will be prompted for your admin password.)
 
I began having similar problems last weekend, MR would load pages with no avatars or buttons to reply, quote etc. Similar problems to you on other sites. Cleared cache, repaired permissions, reset Safari, restarted, ran fsck, disk utilities, you name it. Finally realized I hadn't trashed the Safari plist. Now all is well.
