As the title notes, I just updated my 7,1 to Big Sur 11.2.2 from the 11.2.1 version. My sound went away. The device that worked up to that time, a Creative T20 Series II, went silent. It no longer shows up in the Sound Preferences.

So I plugged it in to my CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 dock, and lo and behold it works. I just doesn't work when I plug it into the rear port on the computer itself, where it and its predecessors have been working just fine up 'til now.

Anyone else have the Big Sur 11.2.2 update kill their 7,1 sound port?

Tom

UPDATE: downgraded to 11.2.1: sound port is back and functioning. Preferences calls it "Headphone port."

I have the same issue, I downloaded and installed Big Sur 11.2.2 and now there is no sound from the Mac mini (Intel version). Should I wait to see if Apple update this issue or is it smarter to go back to 11.2.1?

Boki,

It depends whether you want sound :)

I did, so I downgraded to Big Sur 11.2.1 which was easy because it is (as of this morning) still up on the Mac App store.

Also, if you'd report this directly to Apple Support it might help motivate them to fix this bug in the next release of Bug Big Sur. When I spoke with them this morning, they seemed not to have heard of this one yet...

For me my External Headphones disappeared in Settings but, after a second re-boot it appeared.

Terry,

I rebooted several times - the sound output (AKA External Headphones) refused to reappear. I guess Big Sur likes you better than it likes me LOL

Hi Tom, I can't find the 11.2.1 on the Apple site, but I've written to them asking them for help with this...

Boki,

I just looked again and it's still there: go to the App store from the Apple menu at the upper left of your screen, search on Big Sur . The first one that comes up is the macOS Big Sur under utilities. It is still labeled 11.2.1.

Just download it from there and install.

Hope this helps,

Tom

EDIT: just saw your reply. Let us know whether it works, please.

EDIT #2: At Applecare's request I reinstalled 11.2.2 and guess what? The sound works as it is supposed to, and no other ill effects noted. Phase of the moon?

Hi Tom sorry for the late response, my audio interface (I record music) has been acting buggy lately and I think this is why I couldn't get sound when I updated the OS. I borrowed someone else's interface of a different brand, it worked just fine. I set mine up again, reset everything and I have sound again! I checked the Focusrite (my interface) site and they advised to not install Big Sur updates immediately, but to wait months so bugs can get worked out first.
As I did revert to Big Sur 11.2.1 I'm not sure if they are separate issues or the combination of the two stopped the sound from working, but I'm up and running again. I think I'll leave 11.2.1 in for awhile...Thanks for all your help with this, I really appreciate it! Boki

Would this affect sound coming from the SPDIF Digital Out on a CalDigit TS3? (I am still on Catalina, but considering upgrading to Big Sur)

choreo,

Short answer: I don't know.

I do have and use the CalDigit TS3Plus, but don't have anything DigitalOut to plug in to it. Is there something simple I could do to test the output?

Not that I know of. The main reason I bought the CalDigit was to give me an optical sound out port for my fairly pricy 5.1 speakers (which sound great and everything is wired in through my attic and walls). My 5,1 came with an optical out port built in. The CalDigit is still on my short list of things that "might" be causing my random restarts since many times when my computer freezes I get a series of rythmic loud static pulses through the speakers just as it freezes up and following restart the Mac defaults back to a non-CalDigit sound port.

choreo,

I updated my TS3Plus to firmware 44.1; not sure it didn't already have it... I didn't check it before the update, which I discovered after the fact that it can be checked through the "About this Mac -> System report" under the Thunderbolt section.

I then looked at the back of the TS3Plus and found it has an unlabeled port with a tiny black cover that I assume is the S/PDIF port. When the power is connected to the TS3Plus it glows red inside the cover. I presume that's a good sign. I can't tell whether there's any other signal available there. Sorry.
