Hello,

After upgrading to macOS 11.3, I'm no longer able to mount smb shares from a Solaris server, running the version 11.4.

If look at the tcpdump output with Wireshark, I see an SMB "Negotiate Protocol Request" answered with a succesfull "Negotiate Protocol Response". Right afterwards an SMB2 "Negotiate Protocol Request" is sent, which the server replies with a "STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER".

This happened after the upgrade to macOS 11.3. Older macOS clients can mount the network share without any problems as well the Linux and Windows clients. This seems to be clearly an error on the macOS side.

Clearly there has something changed with the macOS 11.3 SMB client, and it's not only the multichannel support. Looks like others are also affected, but I was not able to figure out what has changed.

Does anybody know how to fix or workaround this?

I have the "same" problem but with the FritzBOX NAS. Until 11.3 update everything worked fine, but now it seems to be a problem wit the smb protocol. The NAS drive is still available on my Windows PC and not updated MacBook but not on my updated iMac.

Not sure what version SMB it uses but my QNAP NAS is still connecting as good as can be here. Now if I could only keep the share connected permanently since some of my apps like MAME and YAC Reader point to libraries on it.

Previously my problems with saving to SMB shares (on a Synology box) only manifested themselves after a few days of being connected, but now this is happening regularly.

Interestingly Adobe Illustrator seems to work fine even after the 11.3 update, but Word, which I previously did not have problems with, now hangs straight away if I try to save to a SMB share. I have a nsmb.conf which I have developed over a few years but whether that is active or not the hang still happens.

Why is this stuff so complicated? In every other respect I have found Big Sur (I jumped in at 11.2) to be very robust indeed, and 11.3 feels very solid, but this one area of saving to Synology SMB shares has always been a weakly supported area.

It just doesn't work reliably and I wish Apple and Synology would get together to resolve these inter-operability problems, and if necessary advise a standard nsmb.conf which was guaranteed to work properly. It is literally the only thing that undermines my use of Macs.

I don't have nsmb.conf – perhaps that's why I'm happy

As Apple encourages the user to move from AFP to SMB, but reading that others have also issues, I'm wondering now what the propper way is to use a fileshare with macOS.

I appreciate the age of the device is old but my 2013 QNAP with SMB works great with Linux, Windows and SMB clients on iOS and iPadOS......but with Big Sur, its terrible.

My Mac is connected via ethernet and I'm lucky if I get 25MB/s out of my QNAP. Its closer to 60MB/s out of other devices.

Curiously if I point Big Sur at a really modern Linux box running SAMBA, it works really well. There's clearly some legacy issues here with older CIFS/SMB servers and Big Sur despite my QNAP supporting SMB3.1.

Well, maybe it's time to get a new NAS. Any recommendations? I was thinking of buying a NAS from Synology.

Well, I'm definitely capable, but I don't want to build my NAS anymore. Did that for many years and I'd like to spend my time with other things and stick to the well supported mainstream.

Anyway, what is your experience with macOS and Synology in general?

Very happy with the combination of macOS and Synology: we use a Synology NAS to host multiple Time Machines and other filesystems.

I have had a great ride... I have an old one and Synology keeps it up to date and chugging along in great shape. Read/write speed is near the theoretical maximum for the ethernet connection and the two HDDs, so I cannot ask for more. Connections are stable. Software is rock solid. Happy camper here.

Fan/disk noise is not as good though, not terrible but a bit distracting as I have it close, if you can keep it in another room that would be ideal. But I suppose it is a necessary evil until massive SSDs are the norm.

Having said that I don't squeeze the NAS capabilities too much. I use it for file sharing and backups. It's my main Plex movie library too. Nevertheless it has been continuously running for several years, 7/24, no problem.

I am planning on a new Synology some day when they support 10Gb Ethernet in the lower models, that would significantly speed read/write up. But so far I don't see much of an advantage in upgrading.

Good luck so far with a QNAP here. Was going to buy the comparable Synology model (I think it was one of the DS218s) but this was just slightly cheaper so it won me over. Mainly use it for storage and our home Plex server too, and no complaints here so far. For storage I moved things like my ebooks/comics, my GOG game archives, backups of purchased software, etc. No real file sharing or anything. Havent had any trouble reading books on my Mac unless I forget to remount the share, same if GOG tries to download an installer for me. Plex performance is pretty awesome, I get messages every now and then that it cant transcode stuff when it needs to even though I bought the model that said it could (and we only use it on one tv at a time), but eh. When my Mac was the Plex server we were guaranteed interruptions every time, this thing just plays like its the cable box. Setup and everything on it was dead simple, the hardest part was just waiting for it to format and setup the drives. Bay 1 is the main drive with everything on it, and it gets backed up every hour to bay 2 with HBS Backup from the QNAP app center.

Someone suggested me to set protocol_vers_map=2 in nsmb.conf and this fixed the issue. It's a good fix for the moment, for the longer term I would have to replace my current NAS anyway.
