Big Sur 11.6.1 Update Upgrades Recovery to Monterey on M1

I just decided to get rid of Safari 15.1 - Google search pages aren't loading properly, and Tab Overview crashes the browser (for me anyway). So I boot into recovery to reinstall Big Sur, and... Oh, we're not allowed to reinstall Big Sur, we have to upgrade to Monterey. But then I'm stuck with Safari 15!

I believe the Google issue has been fixed server-side by Google. I was initially having problems with patents.Google.com using Safari 15, but lately have not.

I haven't seen any info or discussion about the 11.6.2 update, released today. Maybe that update has some help for your problem.

I agree, weird indeed! I created an APFS volume of Monterey before knowing of the switcheroo. This was enough to cause the replacement on my M1 MBAir. 🙁

Hoping Mr. Macintosh has some news soon. I've purchased a 32GB flash drive to create a bootable installer (with the help of an App MacDaddy - hat tip to Andrew Cunningham).

Just erased MBA M1 and rolled back from Monterey 12.1 to Big Sur 11.6.2 via USB recovery but recovery partition is still Monterey. Supposedly using Apple Configurator 2 to restore Big Sur from another Mac also restores Big Sur recovery partition.

I removed the APFS vol.group of Monterey and its Data from MBA... RecoveryOS is still Monterey. Drat. -KM
