I updated to big sur yesterday, now when I reboot the keyboard works intermittently. It works fine for putting in my password or shortcuts like spotlight search, but other than that it won’t enter text into any field, safari, notes etc. when the keys are pressed it makes a hollow tap sound. after several restarts and just leaving it it seemed to work, but having turned it on today the problem persists... has anyone else experienced this?

I've not run across that on my 16" MBP. Have you tried completely shutting it down and letting it sit for 5 minutes or so before restarting (not just selecting restart from the menubar)?

When restarting, make sure to unplug anything you might have plugged into the USB ports, including any external screens.

The next thing to try is to log in as a guest or create a new user account to log in with and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, then we know you have a problem with your particular software configuration and it gets a little easier to diagnose and fix. If the problem still exists, then we know that it could be a system-level problem or even a hardware problem.

Yep tried all of that.

I can enter text into spotlight search bar as well as my login password. Just not in any app. Yesterday after leaving the laptop in sleep mode for a while it started working fine.

Hmm I've upgraded to Big Sur on my 16" MBP & haven't experienced that. Prior to upgrading last week, I had an experience about 2 weeks ago where I woke the computer & it was looking for the keyboard. I got a prompt asking to connect a bluetooth keyboard. I held the power button down to force it off & turned it back on & it's been fine since.

Thanks, I just tried the force shut down and its now working... I also quit forticlient VPN and that could have been part of it too!

I forgot to ask if it was a wireless keyboard... many times, you just need to turn off Bluetooth, remove/"forget" the pairing to the keyboard/mouse, and then re-connect. Of course, you would likely need a corded keyboard/mouse to do this.

@RD22 I can confirm that the FortiClient is the problem. As soon as I try to make a connection using the Forticlient VPN all input is blocked on my MacBook (Big Sur). No difference using an external keyboard. Rebooting solves the issue.
Fortinet should update their software to solve this issue.

I have a similar issue with FortiClient. I can authenticate and connect just fine, but cannot browse network or Internet now. Seems as if the VPN IP address and DNS isn't being assigned correctly.
