i installed Big Sur on my 5,1. It is all working fine, so the first thought was to CLONE the disk as a backup. So I copied the disk (using third party software, as Disk util did not want to)

Now I ran OPen core and added the boot the the EFI of the backup SSD.

I removed my original drive and booted the machine. At the boot select screen, I selected EFI partition, then selected my backup disk. The apple logo showed, and the loading bar went, for about 4 seconds then stopped. it sat at this point for about 30 secs and then the screen just went off. the Machine is still powered but nothing is showing, so I assume my clone is not working

What am I doing wrong, to clone a disk which has Open core?

This is as far as it gets then the screen goes off

As it's a HDD I'm backing up to, I can still hear it chattering away but noting is on screen

I am still having issues, where I just cannot backup my main drive

main drive is a SSD 480GB fitted to slot 1.

Second drive is a HDD 1TB fitted to Slot 2

I have tried Disk Utility, and I get the error attached

I used a third party clone software, and it copied ok, but on boot, it simply will not boot on the 1TB HDD

any idea how I fix this. I want to backup my drive as a bare install, before I commence installing apps etc

thanks

Have you tried using Carbon Copy Cloner? There is a fully functional 30 day trial mode that you can use to clone your working OS install?

Also - where is your EFI partition? Do you have more than one? You may have an old OpenCore install (including the config.plist). If you have removed your primary disk where is the EFI partition that you are using to boot and select the backup disk?

As mentioned above your best bet is to use Carbon Copy Cloner.

They have a good explanation of reasons why it is getting more difficult to to make bootable backups of MacOS

I tried that yesterday, and still no luck. it copies fine. Shut down machine, and remove original drive, and boot from cloned drive

I get the EFI boot screen, but then no OS to select
