Big Sur Messages: can't change font size?

for some reason, i can't change the font size of either the message list or individual messages in font size. i've tried to change them by both keyboard short cut and also via the "View" menu, but neither had any effect.

is this a bug? anyone else experience this?

It doesn't sound right.
You should be able to change the size of individual messages with the keyboard using 'Command' hold then + or - and the size in the message list in preferences> fonts and colours.
Sorry did you mean in imessage? Still applies but font size is in preferences >general.

Yes, i meant Messages app (but yes, iMessages and texts within the app) on Mac. the menu option to adjust things as well as keyboard shortcuts of command +/- exist...but they do nothing.

so, the plot thickens...i contacted apple support and they suggested i try using messages on a new user account...and low and behold fonts were resizable.

they then suggested that i try safe mode, and if that didn't work, to reinstall Big Sur using Recovery mode. i did both of these and neither fixed the problem.

oh well...i've spent way too much time on this for now but hopefully someone at apple can figure out what is going on.

and a final update: i played between the different font options within the Messages app, and after a bunch of flipping between fonts, the problem "unstuck itself." what a bizarre bug but i'm glad it's working now. the huge font for the messages was driving me nuts.
