since the automatic update to Big Sur on my iMac, EVERYTHING is sluggish and I am having to force quit (multiple times) on applications which I didn't experience before the upgrade. the sluggishness of every move is frustrating and not what should be. do I wait for a fix ? is it coming? the update said things would be faster.

Same thing here: incredibly long startup, sluggish response times.
System "forgets" properly mounted external disks...
Big Sur 11.1 on my 2017 IMac is a lousy experience...

I'm running Big Sur on a 2017 27" iMac with a pure SSD. I have experienced no slowdowns or sluggishness or slow response times.

If your iMac has a Fusion drive, that may be the reason. Since Mojave, internal drives are formatted to APFS by default. APFS is designed for SSDs not spinning drives or combo Fusion drives.

There also may be other reasons for your slowdowns.
