Hi

I noticed that if you put Mac to sleep, close the lid, disconnect power, then you move the mouse, Mac wakes up. I hear a chime that new mail arrived. I was playing with settings, and it turned out that:
- "Handoff" is draining battery in sleep mode
- I had Power Nap turned on while on power and not while on Battery. I disabled Power Nap on both modes (Power and Battery)

Now Mac is in proper sleep mode.
Anyone had/has the same problem?

I'm having big problems with Big Sur and power, too. I was using my MacBook Pro (new earlier this year) with nothing attached except power - i.e. no bluetooth devices. It was at 100% battery and clamshell closed overnight. I disconnected power. The next morning when I picked it up, it was still warm on the bottom. I opened it and had 1% battery, and it hibernated within a few minutes. I've check my settings and Wake On LAN is off and Put Hard Disks to sleep when possible is on. There is no reason it should've stayed awake all night. Didn't have this with Catalina, the OS it came with.

Same problem here - running a Macbook Air - closing the clamshell does not shut everything down as it used to in Catalina. Power Nap is already turned off so that's not the problem - something else is running in the background and using up battery.

I'm having sleep issues too, but not as big as yours.
If I unplug the power just before I put it to sleep, it will be at 100%, close my MacBook overnight. Wake up in the morning and it has lost 10% of battery. On Catalina, I could do the same thing, and still be on 100% the next morning

Of course I'm now having external drive issues as well...more of the same crap that happens with every new OS release.

Try putting your MB to sleep using the apple menu. If I have a YouTube video running and close the lid, the video will start playing after about 3 seconds. If I use the sleep command in Apple menu, the video does not play.

Reset SMC, external hard drive issues appear to have resolved. Mac will sleep, but wakes every couple of hours (all options are turned off for this).

Such bullsh*t

My MacBook Air will seemingly not sleep with any version and update of Big Sur.

I only use the system intermittently, let's say once a week, and have found it dead on my desk or my travel bag multiple times. The screen will dim and go out. I can close the lid. But, overnight it will drain 6-10% from the battery as in effect a week later it will be next to dead or have no juice left.

Used it last weekend. Put it away at 80%. Opened it up at lunch time today. 3%.

I have tried pretty much every setting:
Disable power nap.
Always sleep drives.
Do not wake for network access.

And, the system is pretty much stock, apart from a handful of small apps and LibreOffice.
It does Time Machine to its external drive when attached.
Synology backup when it is awake.

I think there has to be some bug in the OS, where we no longer have access to proper sleep settings.

I'm basically an old fashioned user who'd say, dim screen after 10-15 min ( = stand-by, ready to go at moments notice ) and then hibernate after 30 min ( = write RAM to drive, read from drive to get going again ).

Now I know, on the Mac the waters may be muddled with different terminology for napping, sleeping, hibernating, ... but it frustrates me that I cannot trust that my MBA goes to sleep and will be ready to use when I want to use it next and it kills me that the OS is ruining however many few or many finite battery cycles the system's battery has.

I have filed bug reports with Apple Feedback, including my Serial #, and I keep updating my system, hoping there'll be a fix and maybe we can get Energy Saver / Battery preferences sorted, because right now, for me it is not working.

Based on this article, using the Terminal Command my MacBook Air has hibernate mode 3
" Mac Safe Sleep "
And then it is supposed to go to Standby Mode after 3 hours, with the full battery lasting 30 days.

Code:
3. Mac safe sleep mode

Unlike the simple sleep mode above, this mode is safe because it copies the RAM contents to the startup drive before your Mac goes to sleep, like in hibernation mode. This allows you to recover your data in case of battery failure, hardware damage, or any other unfortunate events that can affect your Mac.

However, in this mode, the RAM remains powered on while your Mac is sleeping, unlike hibernation mode. And that’s why the wake-up process is still as quick as in the standard sleep mode.

Safe sleep is also called hibernatemode 3 and is set up for portable Macs released after 2005 by default. However, not all laptops support this mode.
4. Mac standby mode

This mode was mainly designed to save battery charge (even though desktop computers also have this mode). Entering standby mode means that the current session is recorded to flash storage (SSD).

Standby is the next stage that comes after a certain time of simple sleep. Apple computers released in 2013 or later go into standby mode after about three hours of sleep, while older Macs enter standby after about an hour of sleep.

What’s fascinating about this mode is that without being plugged in, a MacBook with a fully charged battery can remain in standby mode for up to 30 days.
