My thoughts so far on Big Sur:

1) Installation went smoothly probably because after a false start I waited until an hour after the Apple server all clear to try again.

2) So far, everything is working fine. Speed is equal or possibly faster and nothing is slow or hanging.

3) This is just me but I don't mind the new iconography. It tells me what the functionality is and that is what is important to me.

4) Safari is MASSIVELY improved! Not just speed but also pages working properly in it that before had errors. This suggests to me that the Safari updates go deeper than UI and are fundamental changes to WebKit.

5) My Non Apple tools are working flawlessly (Office for Mac, Edge, VASSAL, Logos, DBVisualizer, etc. ).

The thing I am liking the most but did not expect to is the new Control Center in the upper right. It is saving me traveling through the Settings app.

Let's see how this goes over time.

I like having all the stuff in the Control Center in one place. I was adjusting Screen Mirroring and Keyboard brightness among other thing. It isn't a game changer but it is nice.

A lot of the icons are terrible and the text in the right click menus is very Windows (cheap) looking.

The control center doesn’t have HD/RAM/etc usage that it should have to make it an exceptional new feature. Instead its Apple once again giving the least amount possible.

Safari still sucks. I don’t understand why it’s so hard to make the tabs look like Chrome:

When a lot of tabs are open:
Show icons to the left
Show text next to icons (as much as allowed)
Don’t hide tabs behind others

I can show text but then I’m back to the absurd practice of hiding tabs behind others

I can avoid that but then I only see icons.

Apple: always going almost all the way there.

Hm. OK - Guess that's a preference thing. I've pulled screen mirroring out to just be in the menu bar and had it that way in prior OS versions as well anyway, and for keyboard brightness I'd adjust that with the keyboard rather than through macOS.
I find that either I'll pull it out to just be in the menu bar in the first place, or it's just as fast to go through System Preferences for me
