Ok I am a old Mac user who last use a Mac with OS 10.5.8. I was very fluent with it and all it’s little tricks and such. The last time I regularly used MacOS was almost 8 years ago. What I have gotten used to is IOS. I have used iPhones and IPads and unfortunately Windows PCs for 8 years.
I tried a new 13 MBP in April and it had the first release of Catalina. I found it very different and after a few days I returned cause it just didn’t feel right. Plus I screwed something up with permissions to the point it was almost useless. Not to mention I learned the day I got it my elderly mom had Covid. She did recover.
My current PC is just slow and I really want a new Mac Air and it seems like Big Sur may help since it seems kind like they merged OS and iOS. Or am I way off base? How is the UI? Thanks for any advice.

the M1 Macs are crazy powerful. Much better than a PC. At first when I saw Big Sur in July, I thought it was a joke (i hated it). Then I actually tried Big Sur and fell in love, I looove the new UI! Optimization is great and the little iOS details are cool (ex. widgets).

11.0 is my favorite macOS release since Cheetah 10.0.

Definitely get a base model M1 Air. Bang for your buck.

I second the previous poster. Get an M1 Air, you can always return it it’s not fulfilling your expectations. Big Sur is visually refreshing but it’s still a desktop OS, which will require a bit of effort to master. But I’m sure you’ll do great :)
