I try to copy via Finder a Time Machine folder (Backups.backupdb) from an external physical volume to another external volume.

First I tried to copy it to a sparse bundle, but I got a strange "The destination has not enough space" error (although sparse bundles can grow as needed and the underlying volume had quite a bit more free space than the source disk).

Then I tried to copy the folder to an external physical volume thinking this should always work, but now the copying never seems to end. After 2 days the copy progress still shows:

And the TB number is raising over the hours, although the real Time Machine folder has only 550 GB!

Why's this happening and how can I copy the Time Machine Folder to a new volume so that it really finishes?

Is the Finder not the right tool? - Carbon Copy Cloner outright rejects copying Time Machine folders (and points to Finder copying!).
