Big troubles !

Next to my bootcamp install, I also partitioned my external 1.5Tb HD, one 1Tb HFS+ and 500Gb NTFS. Up till today, no problems.
But I just restarted in OS X and can no longer access the HFS+ partition.

Needless to say, I started to panic. A lot. Disk utility recognized the volume as MS-DOS FAT and I couldn't mount it. Restarting in Win7 took some of the panic away as I could see the contents of my hfs partition again. But how can I make that volume accessible again in OS X ?

I don't have good knowledge regarding HFS+. Could you repair it with Disk Utility? Is backing up the data while operating under Windows even a possibility?

I tried repairing the volume with disk utility. No go. I guess my only solution, since I can only READ from HFS when in Win7 (and vice versa) is to format a second 500Gb external HD into NTFS, copy everything from the first disk over to the second one (it's less than 400Gb of data), then reformat my 1.5 Tb disk and move everything over again.

I'm thinking of using my 500Gb disk exclusively for Windows ; it's FW400 and that doesn't always work well in Windows, but it has a USB2 interface as well. I'll partition the 1.5tb HD in OS X to HFS+ and transfer everything back again (1Tb backup partition + 500Gb Time machine).

I had trouble ejecting the 1.5Tb disk in Win7, and I think that just turning the disk off may have been the cause of my problems.

Back in the day as an Apple tech, I used it several times to recover a HFS+ partition that had been lost because of Boot Camp gone bad.

I did it by sticking the offending hard disk into an enclosure and then using testdisk to fix it from my Mac.

It runs in the Terminal but it's pretty much got an easy to use GUI.

Since it's an external HD, there's no need to put it in an enclosure, or is there ?

Have you tried Refit?
It's free to use and acts as an efi boot manager on macs, it allows you to choose which partition to boot to when 1st booting up your Mac.

This is of course only if the partition in question is still bootable.

It's not a bootable partition, it's just an external HD with normal HFS+ partition for my OS X software backup.
