I've been searching and reading through the guides and no one answers this question: What's the biggest harddrive a macbook pro can hold?

And to add on to that question, where's the best place to buy it? On my desktop I use about 200 - 250 GB and the highest "upgrade" you can get via the apple store is 200. But if I can go up to 300 (safely of course) I'd love to. I'm not necessarily looking for the "cheap" option because I have a lot of valuable data so I don't want it to crap out on me and crash lol.

Any help is MUCH appreciated...

I don't think they make 300GB drives for the MacBook Pro (I could be wrong and if I was, that'd be okay).

The reason why, you are confined to use a 2.5" drive and I believe 250GB is the max that you can have. You ARE NOT confined however to the RPM speed. Keep in mind that the higher RPM, you usually lose the space. Sorry, but if you are patient, you will have 320GB 2.5" drives and maybe even 500GB.

There is 320gb harddrives out now newegg might have them

I looked on newegg and couldn't find a 320GB 2.5" drive. They may be out there, couldn't find it myself though.

I can not find one!

I have looked at newegg which seems to have taken the link down and I have done google and shopzilla searches. Does anybody know where you can buy the WD 320gb hard drive? Model #WD3200BEVT.
Thanks,
Chris

I've been looking for this drive too..

Western Digitals online store initially had it for $199 but sold out quickly, Then I saw it on NewEgg - for about 2 days, and it was $209.
Cdw lists it on thier site for $259 but its out of stock there too.

I'd love to find one for that initial $199 price so I can get it. I can't concince myself to get a 250GB when the next bigger size is already out and not much more expensive.

Those drives might be too fat.

There are 2.5" drives, and then there are 2.5" drives.

Toshiba, Samsung & WD all have 9.5mm thickness 320GB 5.4k drives out now, or soon to be available, no problem fitting in a MB or MBP.

Model #'s & thickness spec's are posted somewhere here, do a search :p

Hi,
Just to double check, does that wd 320 drive work on the macbook? My old one has gone on the blink and i'm feeling the 320 love :)...

Just that when i rang up the local apple resaler (about as much point as listening to the engaged tone when ringing myself most of the time) they said that the largest was 250 since the other sata drives were 300mb/s transfer and the macbook uses 150mbs... Is this a problem or not?

I know this has been asked and answered in the past, but if I buy a hard drive from a third party will Apple install the drive? I want to upgrade the hard drive in my MacBook Pro, but I'm honestly uncomfortable doing it myself. If Apple won't do the upgrade, can it be done by an authorized apple tech, or does that also void the warranty?

personally, get an external. The point of a laptop is to be portable, and all that good stuff. Don't waste money trying to make it a desktop.

WD had it on the market for a few days, then pulled it. must have found some problem with it. Most retailers are saying it'll be back within 2-4 weeks.

I've just spoken to Western Digital SA. They are expecting a 500GB 2.5" drive in mid March 2008. Thats South Africa, so it will probably hit international markets at the end of January/beginning of February.
